The News and Observer is the first company to sponsor specific sports J programs beginning in the 1985-86 school year. The Observer's decision to financially back soccer can be directly related to the sport's rapid growth among all ages in the KaleighDurham-Chapel Hill area in recent years. "Soccer is really growing fast and we have outstanding programs in our area. Also, track lends itself to individual excellence and achievement, therefore, we are happy to contribute to these sports, said Observed spokesman Frank Daniels III.
