Shallots
A Shallotte woman found guilty on
three counts of misdemeanor child
abuse last Monday in Brunswick
County District Criminal Court plans
to appeal her conviction.
Shallotte attorney Rex Gore,
representing Alexander and Saundra
King, of N.C. 130 west of Shallotte, filed
notice of appeal after Ms. King
was iuuiiu guiiiy on reduced cnarges
of child abuse by Judge William C.
Gore Jr.
Alexander King was found not guilty
on three counts of misdemeanor
child abuse. Both suspects had been
charged with felony child abuse by
the Brunswick County Sheriff's
Department following a fire at the
couple's home on May 19 that
allegedly threatened the lives of
three small children.
According to Chief of Detectives
Phil Perry, officers responded to a
fire at the couple's home around 4:30
a.m. and found the two arguing in the
front yard. Detective Lindsey Walton
and Deputy Carl Pierson helped take
three children from the smoke-tilled
home and charged the suspects with
felony child abuse.
Ms. King was sentenced to two
years in prison, suspended for two
years and placed under supervised
probation for three years. She was
also ordered to attend the
Southeastern Mental Health center's
parenting course and not to consume
or injest any alcohol or malt
beverages.
Judge Gore also ordered that Ms.
King allow representatives of the
Brunswick County Department of
Social Services or Bruaswick County
Sheriff's Department to make unannounced
visits to the home.
