PEOPLE IN THE NEW< Baxley Av Studies Gr Kelly Baxley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Baxley of Shallotte, will receive a $500 scholarship from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation for study with Duke University's Talent laentuication urogram (TIP) tnis summer. During a fast-paced, three-week residential session on the Duke campus, she and 49 other junior high school girls from North Carolina will complete the equivalent of a year of high school work in a single chosen course of study. The scholarships are intended to encourage academically talented girls to enroll in advanced courses in mathematics and science and other challenging studies. Varnam Crowned Brunswick County's 19S4 Teen Miss has been honored once again. Chandee Varnam, 16-year-old daughter of Nicky and Jackie ^ Varnam of Supp K? Teen Miss m Coastal Region ^ Charm during ^ y'J the Miss North R $8 Carolina Charm ^Scholarship ? Pageant in Raleigh, July 4-6. She placed third in the pageant out of 27 contestants from across the state. In addition, Varnam received the "Outstanding Father of the Year" award in recognition of an essay she wrote for the competition. During talent competition, Varnam performed a ballet on pointe to "Bolero." She was awarded the Queen's Medallion for outstanding abilities in the peforming arts. The former Brunswick County Teen Miss also received a certificate for community service work. Sherron Graduates Airman Esther P. Sherron, daughter of retired Air Force Capt. James C. Sherron of lang Beach, has graduated from Air Force basic training at lackland Air Force Base, Texas. She is a 1981 graduate Qf South Brunswick High School, Boiling Spring l^akes. On UNC-G List Two Brunswick County students recently attained the spring semester dean's list at the Univerity of North Carolina at Greensboro. They are Dawn E.
