Spokesman Alton Clemmons said the Brunswick County Amateur Radio Society will hold an organizational meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Sizzling Sirloin Steakhouse in Shallotte. It will be open to all amateur radio operators in the coun"I would say we have at least two dozen operators, probably more with all the new people moving into the area," he said. "There are some I don't have their names." The repeater system will be mounted at 250 feet on the antenna tower of a new FM radio station soon to begin operation in Shallotte. Department of Transportation spokesperson Bill Jones the work could begin on the 2.1 miles of road between the northern and southern city limits of Shallotte "probably any day, as soon as the contract can be signed." The department will be paving over the existing pavement. No additional projects for widening the street are planned at this time. The decision to repave U.S. 17 through Shallotte was made at the state Board of Transportation meeting on Sept. 13 in Jacksonville.
