l-oca! ham radio operators are forming
their own club and installing an
amateur radio repeater system for
use by amateur radio operators countywide.
Spokesman Alton Clemmons said
the Brunswick County Amateur
Radio Society will hold an organizational
meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday at
the Sizzling Sirloin Steakhouse in
Shallotte. It will be open to all
amateur radio operators in the coun"I
would say we have at least two
dozen operators, probably more with
all the new people moving into the
area," he said. "There are some I
don't have their names."
The repeater system will be
mounted at 250 feet on the antenna
tower of a new FM radio station soon
to begin operation in Shallotte. The
club will handle both the installation
and maintenance of the system.
"uther counties In the urea have
already done this," C'lenunons added,
listing counties such as Pender,
Columbus and Sampson. Most
Brunswick County amateur radio enthusiasts
have held membership in
the Azalea Amateur Radio Club or

normal communications would be interrupted,
the repeater would be used

The repeater covers a wide area of
communications for contact between
mobile units and car to station in
remote locations where normal communications
may be poor or nonexistent.
ine repealer picKs up the

He said that since the system
