I essay contest. flBjp Her essay on Jjm "Why We Should EHw?i flsKH Keep North Carolina Beautiful" placed third in competition with those of eighth-graders in a multiple-county area. The contest was sponsored by the non-profit group in conjunction with the N.C. Department of Public Instruction and the A.J. Fletcher Foundation. The 13-year-old daughter of Elon and Gail King of Ash, she is a student in Judy Evans' class. Becky's essay featured two main points. She said the state needs to keep itself beautiful and litter-free to encourage tourists to continue vicitino thn houn^nc ? "If the sides of our roads are clean, it shows we think a lot of ourselves and our community." Completes Course Pvt. William M. Suggs, son of Claude C. Suggs of Shallotte, and lena R. Suggs of Route 5, Taylors, S.C., has completed the flight operations coordinator course at Fort Rucker, Ala. Flight operations coordinators were involved with monitoring aviators' flight plans and controlling IAnny airfields. In Exercise U.S. Army Spec. 4 Lyndon E. Bellamy, son of Dorothy J. Johnson and grandson of Annie M. Young, both of 1-ongwood, has participated in Archway Express in Turkey. An annual Allied Command Europe mobile force land exercise, it included the military forces of eight NATO countries. Bellamy, a 1983 graduate of West Brunswick High School, is an infantryman with the 325th Infantry in Italy' New Assignment Airman George E. Worley III, son of George E. Woriey of Mount Clemens, Mich., and Elizabeth D. Godin of Southport, has been assigned to Ixiwry Air Force Base, Colo., after completing Air Force basic training. Caroon of Southport has been reaDDointed bv Gov .lim Martin tn six-year term on the 15-member Marine Fisheries Commission, which regulates and protects the state's marine, estuarine, commercial and sports fisheries resources. Caroon, 54, is currently serving as vice-chairman of the commission and served on the commission under former Gov. James Holshouser. Caroon is in the seafood processing business in Southport. FFA Team Wins The West Brunswick Future Farmers of America (FFA) took an overwhelming victory against Pender FFA in a forestry contest Dec. 12 near the Pender school. West Brunswick's forestry team members are Sean Ward, Jon Proctor, Kevin Neville and Tommy Cribb. Neville was high scorer in the contest. Study of this project will enable BEMC to assess the future use of advance technology relating to load management controls and automated electric systems, according to a news release from the company.
