Today, Brunswick Town is a ruin, a state historic site where visitors can turn their imaginations to the past. Restoration of the site began in 1950 when the lawrence Sprunt family donated 134 acres of land to the Tnr!>iv it ? notur'a x uuu t i % U'lvtuvav o u iuv wax v. h uu that winds by the ruins of the homes/businesses of prosperous citizens to the Cape Fear River. It was Brunswick Town, in 1766, where area residents first resisted the Stamp Act. Later that year, it was partially destroyed by the British. At the same time it became an active political center and the county seat of New Hanover County until 1739 when the seat was moved to Wilmington. In 1764. when Brunswick County was chartered, the North Carolina Colonial Assembly began meeting at Brunswick Town. Brunswick Town has been no stranger to war.
