Calabash officials voted nearly a year ago to participate in the federal insurance program, but have not adopted a flood damage prevention ordinance pending receipt of flood elevation data, said Town Qerk Janet Thomas. Within the past month, FEMA has notified the town that the highest the water would rise aloiig the Caiahaiih River is 13 feet. Other areas wliere waters would rise significally are along sloughs, said Thomas. The town is mapped in an “A” zone, she said. Only fill dirt, not pil ings, wiii be required to bring pre^r- ties to the minimum elevations set by to reduce the likelihood of flood damage. Some restaurant owners had been concerned that If they rebuilt, their businesses would have to be set on pilings, she said. The meeting with FEMA officials had been rescheduled from earlier this year. (M: SOUTHWIND REALTY INC. COIDWELL BANKER SOUTHWIND REAITYINC / .
