Tornado Drills Set Wednesday Students at North Brunswick High School were to participate in a mock tornado hit Wednesday, March 11, while other schools conducted drills. Wednesday was Tornado Awareness Day across North Carolina, with a statewide drill con ducted between 9:30 a.m_. and 10:30 a.m., said Cecil Logan, Brunswick County’s emergency management coordinator. Under the drill, l,ogan’s office will raloy suofAK mA^iaotlrvn that tornadoes and severe thunderstorms are possible—to the Brunswick County Schools ad ministration. Later, a tornado warn ing-notice to take shelter im mediately because a tornado has been sighted or identified by radar—will be issued for the area. At that point school system ad- miriistratars wi! notify .schools to begin their drills. "I talked with Bill Turner (special assistant for operations) and all schools will be holding the drills,” said Logan. The students go into a routine similar to that of a fire drill, exept in stead of going outside, they stay in side and crouch in the hallways, sid Logan. At North Brunswick High School in Leland, a more elaborate exercise is planned. I»cal fire and rescue units will respond as though a tornado had actually touched down at the school. Explained Logan, ‘‘They’ll go through what they normally would do ** •• «S*S.g. Brunswick tkiiinty has experienced some wind downbursts or shears, but no tornadoes of late ‘‘unless we had them during Hurricane Diana,” he said. “I think there were, but there wasn’t anybody out there to see them.” Statewide there were 16 tornadoes sighted in North Carolina last year, to which were attrihuled three deaths and 10 injuries. O.i the average, said Logan, the sta'.e secs 12 tornadoes a year. While noting that “tornadoes are here and gone almost before you can get any warning out,” I.ogan offered several tips for taking cover should threatening weather occur. “If you’re in a mobile home, there’s only one thing you can do,” he stressed; “You leave it” The Brunswick Plsyprs. a com munity theater group, is seeking memberships and other contribu tions for its upcoming season. Contributions support the produc tions presented by the Players. In turn, during the past several seasons the group has lent its support to other community groups, said Amy Astoske, membership chairman. Proceeds from the 1984 production of “Plaza Suite” were donated to the Arts Center of the Lower Cape Fear toward construction of a theater in Brunswick County, while in 1985, the Players loaned their sets and volunteers to a Dance Theatre of Wilmington production of “Nut cracker.” In 1986, 80 percent of the profits from its "Crimes of the Heart” dinner theater production we.".t to the N.C. Fourth of Ju!” Festival Committee. '' Memberships are $10 per person per year. Other levels of giving in clude donor, $50; patron, $75; and angel, $100 or more. Checks payable to The Brunswick Players may be mailed to Astoske, P.O. Box 10383, Southport, NC 28461.
