Forest Service worked for more than two hours to bring a debris fire behind the school under control. The fire was burning toward the school, with the wind behind it, said Assistant County Ranger Phillip In man. However, the 12-acre blaze was contained at a canal that marked the rear boundary of the school property. A fire line was plowed from the north side, tying in to the big ditch to encir cle the blaze. “It was a threat, but not ss much as it could have been,” he said. "It never got across the large canal. If it had, it would have been a real threat. In the afternoon it would have cross ed.” Firefighters were concerned that overhanging limbs and branches would aid the fire in jumping the slx- to eight-foot wide canal. "Shallotte Volunteer Fire Depart ment was on the other (school) side of the ditch so that if anything spotted ■* RICK UANKURU, above, was among the Shaiiotte firefighters standing by last Thursday as a woods fire threatened to Jump a canal behind West Brunswick STAFF PHOTO Sr SUSAN USWII High School. That the fire occurred in the morn ing rather than afternoon was in the firefighters’ favor, he explained, since the humidity is higher and temperature lower earlier in the day. The fire started as a controlled debris fire for which a permit had been issued. It never crossed outside the landowner’s property line, said Inman. The owner had counted on a small ditch on one side of the proper ty and a drain on the other to contain the fire; they didn’t The landowner was given a warn ing tidret Added Inman, “He just wanted to bum a small area. It burned more than he intended and it could have bumed a whole lot more.” At the high school, several students expressed disappointment that classes were not dismissed early.
