Holiday Brings Heavy Traffic
Five accidents occurred in
ShaUotte over the long and busy
Memorial Day weekend.
Saturday at 9:33 a.m. at the in
tersection of N.C. 130 and U.S. 17
south, Michael Francis SuUivan, 23,
of Lmg Beach, was making a left
turn from Blake Street onto U.S. 17
south, driving a 2V4-ton N.C. NaUonal
Guard truck when he struck a 1982
Chevrolet car operated by Linda
Jean White, 34, of Route 1, Rocky
Point She was crossing from N.C.
130 West to Blake Street at the time.
The impact pushed her car back into
ihe 19o/ Ford van behind iier,
operated by Clayton Dale BatUn, 39,
of MasslUon, Ohio, causing about 150
damage to the right front wheel.
Damages to White’s car were
estimated at $3,000, whUe SuUivan’s
truck had about $800 in damages to
the fuel tank and fender.
SuUivan said he didn’t see White’s
car. He was cited by Patrolman C.B.
Yager for faUure to make a safe
movement.
White was transported to the
Brunswick Hospital with injuries.
At 3:27 p.niL &turday, 500 feet east
of U.S. 17 on N.C. 130 (Holden Beach
Road), Larry /Ulen Evans, 24, of
Route 3, ShaUotte, was westbound on
N.C. 130 in a 1984 Chevrolet West
bound ahead of Evans, Crete Probst
Spaulding of FayettevlUe, had slow
ed and was turning right into the
Milliken Shopping Center in the 1SS6
Dodge car she was operating. Evans
swerved left in an attempt to avoid
striking the car, but hit its left rear.
Damages were estimated at $800 to
Evans’ car and to Spaulding’s car.
No injuries were reported.

for faUure to make a safe movement
Kimberly Danford McLamb, 25, of
Route 1, Supply, was driving a 1980
Plymouth Sunday at 12:40 a.m. Sun
day when she backed from a spot In
the Market Ehepress parking lot on
U.S. 17 in ShaUotte and struck a 1987
Ford operated by Steven Joseph
Robinson of Route 2, Supply.
She left the scene and later told
Patrolman Joey Hoagland she didn’t
reallze.she’d hit Robinson’s car. She
was charged with hit and run with
property damage by ShaUotte
Patrolman C.B. Yager.
Damages to McLamb's car were
an estimated $50, and to Robinson’s,
an estimated $400.
No injuries were reported.
Several wrecks also occurred Sun
day.
At 9 o’clock that night Patrolman
Joey Hoagland was caUed to the In
tersection of U.S. 17 and Mulberry
StreeL
WUUam Henderson Johnson, 46, of
Route 2, Supply, was driving a Dodge
truck when he turned right onto U.S.
17 from Mulberry Street, striking a
1984 Pontiac operated by Lisa Marie
Inks, 21, of Pleasant Garden.
No injuries were reported. Johnson
was cited for faUure to make a safe
movement
Minutes later, an accident occur
red on U.S. 17 500 feet south of its in
tersection with N.C. 130 West
Richard Sherwood HUl, 19, of
ShaUotte, was southbound on U.S. 17
when Lawrence R. Wigal, 73, made a
left turn in front of him from the
center lane.
Damages to HUl’s 1972 Ford were
estimated at $600 and to Wigal’s 1982
Pontiac, $3,000. There were no in
juries.
Based on witnesses' comments,
there were questions about whether
HiU’s headUghts had been on before
the collision.
Hoagland cited Wiga for faUure to
yield the right-of-way.
In a minor incident over the
weekend, slight damage was dme to
the drive-through area at the Ken
tucky Fried Chicken ouUet on U.S. 17
south after an oversize vehicle went
through.
