STUDENTS IN THE NEWS Nubel Earns Masters Degree nuuie 0, Dawn Elien Nubel uf Shallotte, waa awarded the nuutter o( educa tion degree from ^ the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in commencement exercises held May 10. The former Brunswick Beacon staff writer’s con centration was in guidance and counseling. Cheryl L. Rose of Southport, a broadcasting and cinema major, received the bachelor of arts degree. Cray Elected Kimberly Gray of Shallotte has been elected sophomore represen tative to parliament of the Student Govenunent Association at Lees- McRae College at Banner Elk for the 1987-68 school year. She is the daughter of Mrs. Peggy Gibson of Shallotte and H.W. Gray III of Louisville, Ken. Baxley Competed Kelly Aiuie Baxley of Shallotte competed in the Central Regional Matheinatlcs Competition in geometry held April 30 at Davidson County Community College in Lex ington. A freshman at West Brunswick High School, she is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Baxley. Students were eligible to compete in the event on the basis of their per formance in preliminary contests. Recital Held Renee Young of Leland presented her senior piano recital May 26 at Glisson Music Mart’s recital hall in Wiimingion. A senior at North Brunswick High School, she is the daughter of David and Shirley Young. She has studied piano for 10 years under Dr. Carolyn Gresham, receiving numerous awards, and has studied voice for seven years under David Bass. She has competed in various pageants. She was the talent winner in tlie Tri-County Ideal Miss, State Miss Photogenic and North Carolina State Miss Christmas pageants. On Dean's List Christina Elaine Trexler of Southport has been named to the spr ing semester dean’s list at Wingate College, Wingate. To qualify, she carried at least 12 hours of academic work, have had no grade below a C, and have made at least a 3.3 grade point average. Wins Ag Award Gayther Sinunons, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Sim mons of Ash, was named winner of the 1987 agricultural ac complishment award sponsored nationwide by Dekalb-Pfizer Genetics. The award is presented to the senior agriculture student with highest achievement in scholarship, leadership and n super vised agricultural program. Simmons attends West Brunswick High School, where he has been secretary and reporter of the local Future Farmers of America chapter. The group was represented at the convention by Sherry Roseman, Gall Seagle, Kay Couvillon, and Gigi Gore. Roseman and Seagle will attend the Pilot International convention Ju ly 25-28 in Dallas, Texas. Roseman has been appointed ex tension area leader for the district, to form new Pilot clubs. Adult Continuing Education Courses provide a wide variety of educational op portunities for the adult at convenient times in many locations throughout Brunswick County. The program is comprehensive by design, to meet o wide variety of educational needs. Courses ore offered for those who wont to learn to read; while on the other end of the spectrum, training is provided for Vcl’jnteer Firemen, Rescue Personnel, Low Enforcement Officers, and new and expanding industry. Continuing Education Courses ore designed for o lifelong learning process and do not provide college credit. WHO MAY ENROLL? Enrollment in Continuing Education is open to any adult who is eighteen years of age or older. Registration is usually held at the first and second class meetings. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? The registration fee for Occupational Courses is $15.00 per course. Students ore responsible for buying supplies and materials os necessary. There is no charge for Volunteer Fire Department Personnel, Volunteer Rescue Personnel, or Local Low Enforcement Officers for their special training programs. North Carolina residents 65 years of age or older ore exempted from registra tion fees. There is no cost for High School Equivalency (GED) courses or Adult Basic Education courses.
