The presentations were made dur ing Community Watch Day at the Shallotte NaUonal Guard Armory, which featured a variety of booths and educational programs presented by civic groups, county and state t government agencies. Honored, indicated Don Gates, ^ crime prevention officer with the Brunswick County Sheriff's Depart ment and the new head of the state Association of Crime Watch organisations, were Alvin Burney, Royal Oak; Zack Smith and Inge Ar nold, Zion Hill; Betty Young and Faye Smith, Sunset Harbor; Charles Pritchard, John Pritchard and Marie Wescott, Town Creek; L.H. Pets Of Week Recommended County's Top Students Recognized At Banquet More than 100 students of Brunswick County high schools were recognized last week as "the very best” and encouraged to keep on b^ ing the best at a banquet in their honor June 4, at South Brunswick Middle School. Words of praise and support came from Superintendent Gene Yar brough. School Board Chairman James Forstner, and Board Member Doug Baxley, for 108 students who gathered with their families at the annual Superintendent’s Award Ban quet. Each winner received an engraved trophy in the fonn of a gold lamp on a marble base. “Too often kids are recognized for bad things they do," Forstner told the audience, “so it’s nice to con gratulate them for the good things.” Baxley urged the winners to resist peer pressure and continue on the path of excellence. A surprise award came to parents from Yarbrough, who had designed bumper stickers, reading, “We won a student achievement award from the Brunswick County schools." He said, “Next year, we’re going to expand that to grandparents.” Honors came in many categories, ranging from the “A" honor roll to winners of state competition, and in cluding recognition in national pro grams. Several students won multiple recognition. Shannon Cralnshaw of North Brunswick received the highest number of honors, totalling five. These included: a Morehead candidacy, N.C. Teaching Fellows winner, U.S. Presidential Academic Fitness award. National Scholar Athlete, U.S. Army Reserve, and U.S. Marine Corps Outstanding High School Musician award. Gamering four awards each were: Bernard Flythe, South, (Senior High all-district band, N.C. senior high honors band, N.C. writing award, and 1st place, Brunswick Realtors es.say contest); Whitney King, West, (Johnston scholarship at UNC- Chapel Hill, Robert C. Byrd scholar ship, Morehead candidacy, and U.S. Presidential Academic Fitness award); and Sampson McKoy, North, (Thomas Jervay scholarship. National Scholar Athlete, U.S. Army Reserve, NBHS Good Citizen award, and U.S. Presidential Academic Fitness award).
