Meanwhile, New Hanover County and the City of Wilmington statistics were unchang ed or reflected only a slight economic decline. Figures were recently released for Brunswick, New Hanover, Columbus and Pender counties, and for southeastern North Carolina, by the Center for Business and Economics Services at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Barometers of economic health in cluded employment, retail sales, new vehicle registrations, building per mits, traffic at New Hanover County airport, and tonnage at the State Ports Authority in Wilmington. Retail sales, totalled $268.5 million , dollars in Brunswick County for the ’ year ending February, 1987, as com pared with $242.7 million for the previous year, an Increase of 10.6 percent Comparable percentage increases in Wilmington and New Hanover DOT Plans Crime Watch Program Workers with the N.C. Department of TransportaUon will be trained next month by the highway patrol to spot suspicious or overt criminal activity and report it to local law enforce ment officials. The Crime Watch program begins July 15 and will involve 9,000 workers throughout the state. A Brunswick County training ses sion will be held at 2 p.m., June 16, In the county DOT equipment shop. Transportation Secretary James Harrington said the employees “are traveling every day thousands of miles along city streets and secon dary roads. This program will result in some arrests that would not hve been made without the training.” He added that this responsibility will not interfere with regular DOT work, nor involve workers in police work. Employees will simply be 18,000 eyes and ears to help local law en forcement deter crime, he said. Navy aboard the U.S.S. LaSaUe In the Per sian Gulf, Owens died May 30 when he apparently fell Into the water bet ween the ship and a pier. The ship had been docked at Bahrain. Navy of ficials have listed the death as an ac cident. An aunt, Mildred Royals of Supply, said Owens, a machinist’s mate, had re-enlisted In April. He had served four years in the Navy.
