“It was great fun last year, and we
expect this year’s race to be even bet
ter.”
That’s how Race Chairman John
Hicks describes the Seventh Annual
N.C. Oyster Festival Run, scheduled
for Oct. 10 at 8:30 a.m. at Holden
Beach—the event that kicks off the
annual two-day celebration.
For the second consecutive year,
the race is being sponsored by WPGO
Radio Station in Shallotte, where
Hicks is general manager.
This year’s Oyster Festival Run
again will feature three events: five-
and 10-kilometer races, in addition to
a one-mile fun run.
The races, which will cover a flat,
out-and-back course, will start and
finish at Surfside Pavilion on Ocean
Boulevard East.
According to Hicks, entrants
typically come from across the state
to participate in the Oyster Festival
Run.
Last year, the three-race field con
sisted of 71 runners and even had an
international flavor. Helena
Eriksson of Sweden won the 13-19 age
group in the women’s 5K race.
Overall men’s winners last year in
cluded David Holden of Wilmington
in the fun run, covering the one-mile
course in 5:05; Colin Smith, Holden
Beach, in the 5K with a 17:40 clock
ing; and Steve Moffat of White Oak,
in the lOK with a 33:00 mark.
In women’s competition iast year,
overall winners included Kelly Corl
of Rockwell, finishing first in the fun
run with a 7:20 time; and Stephanie
Agosta of Wilmington, capturing the
5K with a 19:00 mark.
Again this year, trophies will be
awarded to the top four male and
female finishers in the fun run, 5K
and lOK races. First-place finishers
in each age group in the 5K and lOK
races also will receive trophies,
although overall winners will not be
eligible for age-group awards.
All finishers will receive custom
silk ribbons.
Age groups in the 5K and lOK races
are as follows: 12 and under, 13-19,
20-29, 30-39, 40-49, and 50 and over.
Runners who pre-registered by
Oct. 6 will receive an Oyster Festival
T-shirt for their $8 entry fee. The
registration fee for other entrants, in
cluding those who sign-up on race
day, is $6 and does not include a
T-shirt.
