- WW TRI-BEACH VOLUNTEER FIRI Tim I'hclps, Paul Fulford and Curl in the barrel push event at Saturday Southport, Annual Fir The Southport and Tri-Beach volunteer fire departments dominated the fireman's competition Saturday at the N.C. Fourth of July Festival in Southport. Teams from six volunteer fire departments participated in the annual event before a crowd of about 200 festival-goers outside the Southport fire station on Nash Street Saturday afternoon. Other departments involved in the competition included Boiling Spring Lakes, Bolivia, Winnabow and Roseboro of Cumberland County. Southport VFD captured top honors in four of the six individual events, winning the ladder climb, dry hose, barrel push and bucket brigade Women's Right A program by club treasurer Gigi Gore on women's rights highlighted the June 28 Pilot Club of South Brunswick Islands patriotic theme meeting at the Brunswick Electric Membership Corp. office in Shallotte. Tri-Beach VFD won the two remaining events, including the water polo and command post contests. In the ladder climb event, five-man teams were timed as two men held a ladder and the other three climbed to the roof of the fire station building. Southport VFD's winning time was 12.10 seconds. The dry hose event involved up to seven men, who were timed as they laid three lengths of hose along a 200-foot course. Southport VFD won with a 26.31 mark. Two opposing teams at a time squared off in the barrel push competition, in which the firemen used IVi-inch hoses to spray a metal drum s Meeting Topic Club members also learned the local club had received the Best Club Award for a two-year-old Pilot Club following compctitition with seven other clubs in the U.S. and in Japan. The award made by Pilot International was based on activities as shown in the club scrapbook compiled by Sherry Roseman. The club's next activity is a safety break on July 30 for tourists through Brunswick County1, when members will offer cool drinks from the rest area on U.S. 17 south of Bolivia. Two six-man teams at a time raced to fill 55-gallon drums mounted on a platform in the bucket brigade contest.
