However, Shallotte Moose Lodge has adopted a highway, at least a piece of one. Lodge No. 710 last month became the second group in the county to join the N.C. Department of Transportation's "Adopt-A-Highway" program. First was the Distributive Education (DECA) Club at North Brunswick High School in Leland. Lodge Governor C.H. Quick signed a one-year, renewable contract in which the men's fraternal organization agrees to pick up litter at least four times during the coming year along a stretch of N.C. 130 that begins at the Shallotte city limits and extends two miles west, to just beyond West Brunswick High School. While the lodge is located on the Holden Beach Road, N.C. 130 East, the choice of the other road was deliberate, Quick said. "We asked for it. We figured it had the most traffic coming in." The project is not only a good community service, it's also good advertising for the Moose Lodge, he added. Lodges statewide are being encouraged to participate in the program. The 246-member group committed to picking up litter along the stretch at least four times a year, following specific safety guidelines. In turn the state agreed to furnish trash bags and trash pick-up (if collected on weekdays), safety vests and certificates of appreciation. Most visible?and most prized?are the promotional signs. Each participating group gets two signs?one near each end of their project?with its name and that of the program. "The signs really advertise the groups," said Jim Cook of Wilmington, District 3 DOT engineer, adding that the signs provide extra incentive for groups to keep their area clean. "It's a thing of pride in community, pride in tneir organization." Moose Lodge signs went up Oct. 31. Armed with "paper puncher" sticks made by fellow lodge member Addison Hayes, Gov. Quick and members Richard L. Simmons of Somersett Landing and Junior Knox of Supply checked out the area right away. Their biggest find: fast-food containers. "Everybody should have to do this," said Simmons, pausing as he filled a trash bag with litter. "If they did they would stop throwing stuff out." Contracts Available Cook, whose office is located in Wilmington, coor dinates the local Adopt-A-Highway program. It is open he said, to any community or civic organization, private business or industry. Participants range from high school age into their 70s. "You name it," he continued. "Ladies' exercise clubs, Partners Alone Together, DECA?just about anybody." So far, 20 or more groups have signed on in both New t **# &' m^ " i W li v m 13 . SHALLOTTE MOOSE LOD^E Gov C.H. Brunswick, with only four miles adopted, i Cook is hoping that greater awareness will lead to more contracts, because with the Adopt-A-Highway program, everybody wins?club, community and state. Removing roadside litter costs North Carolina approx- | imately $1 million each year, taking money away from i needed highway maintenance and improvements. Adopt- jjjj A-Highway gives the state an opportunity to shift [ resources to road repair instead of clean up. DECA Was First ! "That got the attention of us all," said Norman 1 Melton, advisor to North Brunswick High School's DECA * i chapter. Also, he added, the idea of care for and responsibility for the environment seemed to appeal to the ctllHnntc i Chapter members also liked the idea of being the i first group in the county to sign a contract. It was a mat- & i ter of DECA pride in the leadership the chapter has if! shown countywide in recent years, through projects such ^ as a drug education program. Said Melton, "Once we ft make a commitment we stick to it and carry it through." g The G5 members committed themselves to the pro- g ject, and only then invited Cook to visit. He showed them Rj , a short videotape that DOT requires all participants to y , view. The students were very enthusiastic, Melton and ja Cook agreed. ? They'll be tending a stretch of U.S. 74-76, one mile either side of the Leland overpass. While Leland isn't a , major tourist destination, it is a major transit area. "The ! condition of the roadway contributes to first impressions i of the area," said Melton, with a clean roadside contributing also to pride in the Leland community. Some Shallotte Moose Lodge members share those sentiments. "I hope it becomes a habit with everybody," said Junior Knox.
