The committee is cotnnaspri nf representatives from the state's eight conservation areas, with Ms. Wilson representing Area Six, which is composed of Brunswick and 11 other coastal counties. According to Brunswick County Soil and Water Conservation District Chairman James Bellamy, the teacher recertification class involves conservation and environmental issues. The one-week class previously has been offered in the summer at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and Wilkes Community College. However, the committee plans to study offering the class across the state, Bellamy said. Vickie and William Barrow Jr. Attend Seminar Brunswick County Agricultural Extension Agent William Barrow Jr. and his wife, Vickie, of Long Beach, recently attended the R.J. Reynolds Advanced Seminar for Extension Agents and Spouses at Pinehurst. The two-day session featured presentations on leadership and family involvement and sharing in the professional's success. It was sponsored by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and the N.C. Agricultural Extension Service. Attends Meeting Hubert S. Reaves of the Brunswick County Health Department recently participated in the North Carolina Passenger Safety Association's quarterly board meeting on Nov. 3 and 4 in Hickory. He also attended a meeting of the membership committee, of which he is a member. Reaves coordinates the health department's child safety seat program, which provides safety information on child restraint and seat belt use and loans infant and toddler car seats to parents. Long Recognized Cadet Major Robert D. Long of Shallotte, a member of the ROTC batallion at Western Carolina University, received three awards during the unit's fall awards ceremony for performance during the 1988 spring semester. He received the Military Proficiency Award, the Sons of the American Revolution Award and the ROTC Recondo Award. He is a junior majoring in basin ess law at Western, where is wife, Sonya Williams Long of Shallotte, is also a student. Leads Section When the East Carolina University Symphonic Wind Ensemble gave its fall concert on Nov. 7, a Brunswick County coed was among the 55 student musicians. As a reminder the club will light, for the third consecutive year, a holiday "safety" tree on the front lawn of the main United Carolina Bank office in Shallotte, said club spokesman Gail Seagle. The tree will be decorated as in the past in all white lights. But this year, when a fatality occurs on a county roadways, she added, a white bulb will be replaced with a red one to mark the death. "We want to remind motorists to drive safely and defensively and to avoid drinking and driving," she said. Sherry Roseman, projects coordinator, is in charge of the effort. The public is invited to the treelighting ceremony, which will be held Sunday, Nov. 20, at 5:30 p.m. at the bank on U.S. 17. Local Girl Scouts will sing Christmas carols and Pilot President Kay Couvillon will comment on the project.
