The South Brunswick Lady
Cougars rode a 15-point opening
period to win to their first Waccamaw
2-A Conference basketball
contest of the season last Friday,
39-30, over visiting West Brunswick.
The win improved South to 1-5 in
league play and 3-9 overall while
West fell to 2-5 and 4-8.
Tessa Lee led the way for the Lady
Cougs with 18 points while Letha
Hollins added 13.
Cynthia Williams and Selena
McNeil scored seven points each to

South Brunswick used its 15-6 edge
in the opening period to gain a 24-15
halftime advantage.
West Brunswick missed numerous
chances at the free throw line to cut
into the South lead in the third period
as the Lady Cougar advantage grew
to 33-21.
In all, the Lady Trojans scored all
six of their third-quarter points from

Brunswick and Waccamaw last week
in middle school boys' basketball ac
noil.
The Pirates edged past host South
Brunswick 39-34 Monday and ripped
Waccamaw 69-23 last Thursday for
the sweep.
South Brunswick
Shallotte took an 11-5 first-quarter
lead and maintained its six-point advantage
enroute to a 19-13 halftime
spread.
The Pirates' lead grew to eight,
30-22 at the end of the third period
before South Brunswick rallied to
outscore Shallotte, 12-9 in the final
quarter.
Leverne Jenrette led Shallotte with
14 points followed by Lonnic Mitchell
with 10.
Kevin Smith scored 14 to lead South
Brunswick while Josh White added
seven.

West fought back from a 35-21
deficit early in the final period to
make one last run at the Lady
Cougars. The West girls went on an
8-0 tear to cut the South lead to 35-29
with 3:30 to play, but could get no
closer. In fact, the Lady Trojans
managed just one more point in the
time remaining, a Cynthia Williams
free throw.
During the closing three minutes
West froze at the free throw line
again, hitting only one of their final
five attempts.
Both teams continue WC play Friday
with West hosting Whiteville and
South entertaining North Brunswick.

and Leverne Jenrette added 10 as the
Pirates whipped Waccamaw, 60-23
behind a big second-quarter uprising.
Shallotte managed only a 6-5 lead
at the end of the opening period
before outscoring the Eagles, 23-2 in
the second quarter for a commanding
29-7 half time lead.
Waccamaw cut the Pirate advantage
to 18 in the third quarter to trail
41-23 before Shallotte blanked the
Eagles, 19-0 in the final period.
Marcus Bowens led Waecamaw
with eight points while Terrance
Vereen added five.

The Pender Patriots swept the
South Brunswick cagers in nonconference
basketball action for the
second time last week with a 70-54

Anthony Rowell led Pender with 21
points while Elvis Simpson added 15
and Tyrone Murphy 14.
Robert Flythe scored 12 points to
lead South Brunswick (3-3, 6 9) and
Konji Harrison added eight.
The Cougars jumped out to an early
lead clinging to a 14-10 advantage
in the opening period.
However, South Brunswick could
manage only eight second-quarter
points to trail, 30-22 at halftime.
