ATMC Members To Elect Two Directors, Have Chance At $1 ,000 In Cash Prizes Atlantic Telephone Membership Corp. holds its annual membership meeting Friday, Oct. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the West Brunswick High School gym in Shallottc. Members will elect two directors. Registration begins at 4 p.m., and the first 300 of the cooperative's ap proximately 19,000 member-own ers to register will each receive a dollar. All attendees will receive to kens of appreciation. This year, in addition to approxi mately 25 larger gifts to be awarded as door prizes, ATMC will give away $1,000 in cash to lucky mem bers, said Percy Woodard, who is in charge of member relations and purchasing. The top door prize is $500; second, S300; and third, $200. Jazz vocalist Nncnna Freelon, visiting artist at Brunswick Com munity College, will be the featured entertainment. Refreshments will include free finger sandwiches, soft drinks and coffee. During the business session members will vote to fill two seats on the board of directors. Each di rector elected will serve a three year term. The District 2 (Thomasboro Calabash) seat is now held by Jen nings Edge of Route 7, Shallottc, who has been nominated for re election. The District 4 (Ocean Isle-Shal lotte Point) seal is held by William T. (Rusty) Russ Jr. However, his fa ther, William T. Russ Sr. of Shal lotte, a retired businessman, has been nominated to succeed him. Russ Jr. was living in the Ocean Isle Beach area when elected to the board of directors, but has since moved permanently to Bricrwood Estates, Shallottc. Bccausc the area is outside the district, he is not eli gible for nomination to the scat. As of Tuesday they were the only nominees for the two scats. Nom inations by petition arc accepted up to 10 days prior to the annual meeting. Also, nominations are ac ccpted from the floor of the meet US f-: as**.-.,-,.. ing. In other business, members will hear reports from General Manager Russell D. Price, President Carol Dan ford, and a board member rep resenting Douglas Hav.cs, secre tary-treasurer, who is undergoing treatment in a Charleston, S. C., hospital for injuries received in an automobile accident. In addition to Hawes and Dan ford, continuing members on the board of directors include Lyle Ray King of Ash, Charles H. Mills of Winnabow; P. R. Hankins Jr. of Bolivia; and Marion Davis of Supply. Members may vote their own ballot and up to five proxies. However, all proxies must be regis tered with ATMC before 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26. Members can combine registra tion of proxies with "Customer Appreciation Day" Tuesday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the co op office on N.C. 130 west of Shalloltc. The dance will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Oct 28, from 8 p.m. to midnight. Admission for high school and middle school students is $3. Senior Aide Applicants Sought For Brunswick County Agencies Applicants are being sought for several vacant Senior Aide posi tions in Brunswick County. The Senior Aide program in volves low-incomc seniors in useful community service employment while they continue to look for un subsidized employment in the pub lic or private sector. Coordinator Dewey Graham said that in Brunswick County, Senior Aides work with Hope Harbor Home, the Town of Navassa, the Volunteer and Information Center and Home Mission Center, Bruns wick Community College, and Brunswick County's Social Ser vices and Parks and Recreation De partments. Funded by the U.S. Dept. of Labor, the program for Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover and Pen der counties is administered locally by the Cape Fear United Way. Seniors are paid $3.40 an hour and can be paid for no more than 1,300 hours of work in a year. Most work 20 hours a week year-round. Aides also are entitled to paid sick leave, paid holidays and paid vacation. They are covered by and contribute to Social Security. To be eligible, applicants must be age 55 or older, with a family in come that does not exceed 125 per cent of the poverty level. Social Security benefits are considered in come, but not welfare payments nor veterans' service-connected disabil ity benefits. Agencies where the aides arc placed are encouraged to place them on the agency's payrolls in full-time jobs when vacancies oc cur, and to encourage and counsel aides on how to seek regular em ployment. Shoots Begirt Nov. 3 Supply Volunteer Fire Depart ment will begin its fall turkey shoots Friday and Saturday, Nov. 3 and 4, continuing each weekend through Dec. 23, said spokesman Candy Fields. Hours are 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the fire station, which is located on N.C. 211 just south of U.S. 17 at Supply.
