Room Tax Dollars, Grant Will Help Promote Area BY SUSANNE D. SARTELLE, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT South Brunswick Islands Chamber Of Commerce One of my favorite things to do with the chambcr is to take a little bit of money and make it stretch a 1-o-o-o-ng way! Another excellent SARTELLE opportunity is before us. Using accommodations tax monies, some of the towns in the South Brunswick Islands have banded together this year to promote tourism. And a new projcct will soon be underway to pro mote our number one industry. The chamber has received a grant from North Carolina Travel and Tourism in the amount of $4,000. We have to match it, not equally, but with only $1,000. This is strctching dollars! This money will be used for an extensive media cam paign, designed to create and cnhance the identitv * ol Uic South Brunswick Islands as an atlraclivc bcach destination in our state. This pfujcvi wii! pioviuc iiiuic cdiioriai coverage of our area's attractions and amenities. Stories will be written and distributed to North Carolina media and to major media in key out-of-state markets. As we told the Department of Travel and Tourism in our grant pro posal, we envision this to be an intensive two-month effort to impact shoulder season travel in the spring. And in addition to the develop ment of editorial material, we will invite travel writers to visit our area and see for themselves the great opportunities for vacationing. Lengthening the season is a primary goal in promoting our tourism industry because we arc having tremendously successful summers. And with all the amenities the area has to offer, our job is getting easier and easier. We have plenty to promote. Thanks to all of you, chambcr members and local town representa tives, who make it work!
