PUBLIC COMMENT SOUGHT
Three Firms Competing
For Nursing Home Beds
A June 12 public hearing at
Brunswick Community College is
just part one part of a lengthy state
review process under way for three
firms that have applied for the 60
nursing home beds that will be li
censed this year in Brunswick
County.
Two local facilities that hope to
expand their services and a Virginia
company have applied for the beds,
said Keith Caughran, a project ana
lyst in the certificate of needs sec
tion of the state Division of Facility
Services.
Based on estimated need, the di
vision's health planning scciion al
located 60 nursing home beds this
year in Brunswick County. Nursing
home beds in North Carolina arc
classified as either skilled-care
beds, intermediate-care beds or
home for the aged (H.A.) beds.
H.A. beds arc not included as part
of the 60 beds allocated.
T&G Properties, which operates
Brunswick Village Rest Home of
Shallouc, has applied for 30 skilled
care beds and 30 intcrmcdiate-carc
beds. The cost of the facility is esti
mated at S1.33 million.
Brunswick Cove Nursing Center,
Inc., of Lcland, the newest facility
in the county, will offer 20 skilled,
40 intermediate and 20 H.A. beds
when it opens. Like Brunswick
Village, Brunswick Cove has ap
plied for another 30 skilled beds
and 30 intermediate beds, with con
slruction costs estimated at
$880,500.
The third agency ? HP/North
Carolina 1, Inc., of Roanoke, Va. ?
has applied for 30 skilled, 30 inter
mediate-care and 20 H.A. beds.
Caughran said the estimated cost of
construction is SI. 77 million.
The company plans to build on
U.S. 17 north of Bolivia, according
to a tax map listing on their applica
tion and information from the
Brunswick County Tax Department.
Caughran said the certificate of
need review process started April 1
and will last between 90 and 150
days. Applications arc reviewed us
ing about 15 criteria including fi
nancial feasibility of their plans and
a site evaluation.
The review will include a public
hearing Tuesday, June 12, at 1:30
p.m. in the ALS Building teaching
auditorium at Brunswick Commun
ity College's main campus in Sup
ply.
Caughran said public participa
tion at hearings varies depending on
local interest. Some hearings attract
only a handful of people while oth
ers draw several hundred.
Local residents also have until
May 16 to submit written comments
to the Certificate of Needs Section,
Department of Human Resources,
Division of Facility Services, 701
Barbour Drive, Raleigh, N.C.,
27603.
