PEOPLE IN THE NEWS Nine Students To Receive NCSU Degrees Nine Brunswick County students received degrees Dcc. 19 at N.C. State University's first fall com mencement for summer and fall term graduates. Previously NCSU has awarded all degrees in May ccremonies. Completes Course . Sgt. Christopher D. Benton has completed a U.S. Army primary leadership course. He was trained in supervisory skills, leadership principles and small unit training techniques es sential to a first-line supervisor in a technical or administrative environ ment. Benton is a strategic/electronic warfare equipment repairer at An drews Kascrne, Berlin. He is the son of William and Gloria Benton of Route 9, Shallottc, and a 1985 graduate of West Brunswick High School. Locals Elected Three Brunswick County resi dents have been clcctcd officers for 1991 by the Cape Fear Area United Way Board of Directors. Elected were Polly Russ of Shal lottc, allocations vice president; Herb Bell of Long Beach, planning vice president; and Roberta Fugate of Long Beach, information and re ferral advisory board chairperson. Other board members from Brunswick County include John M Kane of Southport; Dr. Lee Lang ston and John Marshall, both of Shallottc; and Sue Vladuchick and Cedric Waddcll, both of DuPont. Cape Fear Area United Way serves Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender counties. Wins Rifle Farl Clcmmons of Supply has won a Rugger 1022 rifle with scope and 1,000 rounds of ammunition. The BA unit of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 495, held a drawing for the ri fle at their Dec. 14 meeting in Whitcvillc. Temporarily On Staff Wilton Harrclson of Shallottc, a retired agribusiness dealer, has joined the staff of the Brunswick County Agricultural Extension Service on a part-time basis, an nounced Milton Coleman, director. Harrelson has a B.S. degree in agronomy from N.C. State University and 39 years of experi ence in agribusiness. He will help the staff until the horticulture/agron omy position vacated by Billy Barrow is filled. In Middle East Two more local military person nel have been deployed to the Mid dle Hast in support of Operation Desert Shield. U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Eugene D. Midkiff is serving with Marine All Weather Attack Squad ron 224, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro, Calif. He is the son of Margaret F. Holmes of Route 3, Shallotte. U.S. Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Robert V. McCoy is serving aboard the friagc USS Thomas C. Hart, homcportcd in Norfolk, Va. He is the son of Bruce and Connie Taylor of Route 5, Shallotte and joined the Navy in February 1988. Operation Desert Shield is the largest deployment of U.S. military forces since Vietnam. The operation is in response to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait and threat to Saudi Arabia. ASU Lists Three Three Brunswick County stu dents have qualified for the fall semester dean's list at Appalachian State University in Boone. To qualify, students must attain a 3.25 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and carry at least 12 hours of academic credit during the term. Parodi of Calabash wants to rally fellow former resi dents of the Pascack Valley area of Bergen County, NJ., to the finan cial and emotional support of a 3 1/2-year-old girl from the area who is undergoing treatment for leuke mia. The child is Alyssa Granados, who was recently featured in The Brunswick Bcacon. She and her mother, Nancy, arc now living with Nancy's parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Johnston of Brick Landing Plantation and formerly of Mont vale, N.J.
