Football, Volleyball, Tennis Awards Flow At West Brunswick BY JOHNNY CRAIG Volleyball and girls' tennis teams took the spotlight at Monday's fall sports awards ccremony at West Brunswick. Also honored were both varsity and JV football teams as well as a host of students who re ceived scholar-athlete awards from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association for the spring, 1990, school semester. Timmy Clemmons (track), Allen Hewett (tennis). Amy Caison (soft ball), Perry Culpepper (softball), Emily Gore (softball). Heather Hughes (softball) and Pam Detrie (softball) were all recipients of the NCHSAA scholar-athlete award. All achieved a minimum 3.5 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) dur ing the semester of their athletic participation. Culpepper also took top honors on the Lady Trojan volleyball team by receiving the coaches award. The team tri -captain and top setter was a four-year player and helped lead West to the state playoffs last fall for the first time in 13 years. Gore, one of the team's top servers, was named most improved and Nicole Norris received the rookie-of-the-year award from coach Debbie Newman. "It was great to make the playoffs this year for the first time in a long while," said Newman. "We have 13 players returning next fall and we expect even better things ahead." The volleyball team also captured its third straight Brunswick County championship and listed two play ers to the All-Waccamaw Conference team ? Meg Small and Culpepper. Erika Fan received the coaches award in girls' tennis. Farr teamed with Christy Poulos to advance to the state 1-A ? 2- A doubles champi onships in late October. The pair al so was honored for being named to the All-WC team. While the Lady Trojan duo quali fied for the state championship tour ney, the West Brunswick girls also advanced to the second round of the first-ever state team championships. Robin Campbell was named the most improved player and also re ceived an award for being the team's number one singles seed. In addition to their state playoff participation, the Lady Trojans fin ished 9-3 in the WC and 10-4 over all. Included in the season was a win over Whiteville for the first time in three years. The loss was al so Whiteville's first in league play in the last three years as well. ***** Two-way starter Daniel Russ was nameu the varsity football's greatest contributor ? the team's top award. Brian Aldcrson and Aaron Butler shared the best back award while Donnie Warren was named the most improved player. Charles Thorpe took best defen sive lineman honors and Clcmmons received the best offensive lineman award. Jeff Letino was honored with the head hunter award. Receiving Ali-WC honors were Lance, George Daniels, Clemmons and Russ. Also, some 13 Trojans received All-Brunswick County honors in cluding Lance (co-player of the year), Jim Grissctt, Clemmons, Alton Johnson, Tony Caison, Lance, Butler, Lonnie Mitchell, Thorpe, Daniels, Russ, Jerry Reaves, Letino and Bryan Fleming. Two local businesses were hon ored by head coach Marshall Seay for their contribution to the West football program ? Captain Nance's Restaurant of Calabash and James and Connie Russ of Ocean Isle Beach. Both provided Trojan grid dcrs with team meals during the season. Wayne Branch was named the ju nior varsity's greatest contributor alter seeing action both offensively and defensively for the Trojans this fall. William Stanley received the best back award while Steve Brooks took best lineman honors. ***** Guest speaker John Robert Bell, a veteran college coach and educa tor, opened the ceremony. Bell was head football coach and athletic director at East Tennessee Stale University during 1966-72. In 1969 he guided East Tennessee to the a national championship in the Grantland Rice Bowl. As result. Bell received national coach of the year honors. Prior to coming to East Tennessee, Bell served as an assis tant for 20 years at Georgia Tech under the legendary Yellow Jacket coach Bobby Dodd. Bladen Cagers Sweep Past North Brunswick East Bladen took a Waccamaw 2 A Conference basketball double header from host North Brunswick last Friday winning the boys' game 52-46 while taking the girls' contest 65-45. TV Powell scored 19 points to lead East Bladen in the boys' game and Maduka Ballard led North Brunswick with 11. Morris Johnson added 12 points for East Bladen while Andre Grey added 10. The Cougars led 14-10 in the first quarter and extended their lead to eight points at the half, 29-21. The East Bladen advantage re mained at eight points at the end of the third quarter, 39-31. North Brunswick could get no closer than six in the final period as the Scorpions outscored the Cougars 15-13. Tosha Robbins scored 14 points to lead the Lady Scorpions (1-9) in the girls contest while Terri Cowan led East Bladen with IS. East Bladen also won the junior varsity game 65-45. North Brunswick continues Waccamaw Conference play Friday hosting West Brunswick. The Scorpions also travel to South Robeson next Tuesday in another WC contest. The Cougars boys romped to an 85-40 win while the girls dropped a 44-41 decision. Josh White scored 23 points to lead the South boys to their third straight league win without a loss. Preston McGriff added 15 points for the Cougars (3-0, 9-3) followed by Greg Williams with 14 and Marcus Smith 10. Franklin McDonald scored 12 points to lead West Columbus. The Cougars led 18-13 in the first quarter before blowing the game open for good in the second period. South held a commanding 47-25 halftime lead. West Columbus managed just five third-quarter points as the South lead grew to 74-30. The Cougars then outscored West Columbus 11-10 in the final period. In the girls' game, Allison Cum bee led the I-ady Cougars with 12 points and J ana Bowen scored 14 for West Columbus (3-0, 9-2).
