This Oid Dog Learns
A New Trick Or Two
We have heard it said that "You cannot teach an old dog new tricks."
That may well be true where old dogs are concerned, but Jiis "Old
Dog" has discovered that he can al- | ? n
ways learn a new trick or two.
Actually, most of the new golf
tricks that I have learned in the past
15 years have been new ways to
communicate while teaching old
tricks. If you are a teacher and a
coach the basic theory of a good
golf swing does not change all that
much. New and technically-ad
vanced equipment may require

some minor adjustments. Minor adjustments that accommodate minor
changes to basic theory do not really qualify to be called "new theory."
Recent trends to use metal woods and cavity back irons may be traced
to their high-tech designs which are more forgiving of off center hits and
more accommodating for unschooled swings. In short, such clubs allow a
golfer to get better results with the same old swing imperfections which
linger in all our games.
Hogan: ' Control Bad Shoots'
No less a golfer than Ben Hogan stated that golf is not a game of good
shots, rather it is a game of exercising a greater degree of control over your
poor shots. That kind of control comes from swing consistency and control
ling emotions on the course.
It is for that reason that I work hard with my high school players to
eliminate double bogies. With young, emotional high school golfers a dou
ble bogie is a real killer for an otherwise good round of golf. And since
they compete entirely at stroke play, the impact of a bad hole or two is
much greater than it would be in match play.
Bad Shot + Dumb Shot = Double Bogie
Stroke play places a greater demand on players to be patient with
themselves and with the course they are playing. One way of defining pa
tience is not allowing a bad shot to cost you r^ore than one stroke. When a
good golfer scores a double bogie he has hit one bad shot and one dumb
shot. The dumb shot is usually a gambling or ill conceived effort to make
up for the poor shot.
When a golfer follows a poor shot with an ill advised recovery shot,
his emotions may compound to interrupt his routine, to alter his tempo, or
to reduce his concentration on the next shot When that happens, a golfer is
said to have "choked" or to have had his "wheels come off" during the
round. The bottom line is that the player has lost control of his poor shots.
Byron Nelson As Tom Watson's Guru
An article in the current edition of Golf Digest recounts how Byron
Nelson and Tom Watson became acquainted and established a working re
lationship. In his early years on tour, Watson was often accused of "chok
ing" in the final round after playing himself into contention. Watson had al
ways had a relatively fast swing which put pressure on him to maintain a
good swing tempo.
Nelson had noticed that Watson's loss of tempo made his already fast
swing become jerky and uncoordinated, causing poor timing of the club
head through the hitting zone. Nelson knew that when the upper body
moves fast the lower body must move even faster to lead the downswing.
When Watson's game was under pressure, his knees were not moving
smoothly and quickly through the downswing.
Smooth Tempo - Fast Swing
Since Watson is a very bright person who talks fast and walks fast,
Nelson knew that his natural swing speed would always be fast. The most
valuable lesson he was able to impart to Watson was to have him slow
down his initial move in the backswing. To help Watson achieve a
smoother tempo, he had Tom develop a more deliberate preshot routine and
practice slowly shuffling his feet when setting up to the ball. He also taught
Watson to relax his right side at address and use a slow waggle.
Under Nelson's continued tutelage, Watson won 30 tournaments over
the next ten years to become a dominant force on tour until his aggressive
putting stroke went haywire. To this day his swing tempo is still smooth,
his swing is still fast, and he strikes the ball as well as ever.
Any golfer under pressure would be well advised to follow Nelson's
advice. Slow down, be more deliberate in addressing the ball, concentrate
more carefully on each shot, and be conscious of delivering the clubhead
through the hitting zone.
The next time you feel a small constriction in the throat, blurred vision,
and you hear a small squeak in your axle try this slow down routine to get
your swing back on track. It isn't really a new trick, but if it works for you,
it will feel like one.
