PEOPLE IN THF NFWS Nine Earn Degrees At UNC-W Nine Brunswick County students received degrees from the Univer sity of North Carolina at Wilming ton at the end of December 1990. These students completed re quirements for the bachelor's de gree: Tina Rcncc Butler, Sandra Rcncc Jones, Jancy Lynn Sturtz, Carole Dullon Williams and Wendy Gay Williams, all of Lcland; Shel ley Dawn Harrcll of Ocean Isle Beach; Jtnnifer Rcncc Wcscott of Bolivia; Eric Kccnan Jones and Sara Jane Kirby, both of Southport. Mercer Graduates Airman Tonya D. Mercer has graduated from U.S. Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the air man studied Air Force mission, organization and customs mercer and received special training in hu man relations. Mercer is the daughter of Worth and Marge Mercer of Route 2, Boli via. She is a 1990 graduate of South Brunswick High School. Redwine Participates State Rep. E. David Redwine of Ocean Isle Beach took part in the recent 1991 Chancellor's Forum at East Carolina University in Green ville. The value of teachers and other mentors for talented youngsters who have potential for success was the theme of the annual forum held Jan. 7 and 8. Redwine was one of about 300 community, business and education leaders from eastern North Carolina who gathered for the forum. Two Complete Training Two local men recently complet ed eights weeks of U.S. Navy re cruit training at Recruit Training Command, Orlando, Fla. Seamen Recruits Andre L. Stan ley and Richard G. Crabree studied general military subjects designed to prepare them for further acadcm ic and on-the-job training in one of the Navy's 85 basic fields. Stanley, a 1990 graduate of West Brunswick High School, is the son of Linward M. and Logene W. Stanley of Route 3, Shallottc. Crabtrcc, a 1985 graduate of West Brunswick High School, is the son of Richard J. and Jackie M. Crabtrcc of Route 1, Supply. Both men joined the Navy last September. Mintz Cited Betty Mint/, of Leland is Bolivia Elementary School's bus driver of the month for January, cited for her eight years as a "dedicated and safe ly conscious" driver. One of a bus driver's responsibil ities is checking the bus and its equipment before every trip. Mrs. Smith also works in the school cafeteria and as a parent is willing to help teachers whenever possible, a release indicated. She has a G.E.D. and is a member of Town Creek Baptist Church. She and her husband, David, have two sons, David Jr. and Kevin. Arrives For Duty U.S. Army Pvt. Robert L. Doanc Jr., a combat engineer, has arrived for duty at Camp Casey, South Korea. He is the son of Robert L. and Barbara H. Doanc of Calabash. Help Appreciated Carla Ramm, volunteer of the month for January at Bolivia Ele mentary School, has given her time and cre ativity in a kin dergarten class, the media cen ter, school book fair, PTA fund raising efforts and other school projects. She attended RAMM Bolivia Elementary and South Brunswick High schools and stud ied at Mr. David's Beauty School. She has been a hair stylist for 8 1/2 years. Mrs. Ramm and her husband, Joseph, live with their son. Jason Eric, at Town Creek. Employee Honored Bolivia Elementary School's Jan uary employee of the month, Christy Brown, is new to the school and to the teach ing profession. She has a bach elor of science in elementary education from Wingate Col lege and serves on the guidance, brown social studies, physical cducation/hcallh and math committees. She and her husband. Jack D. Brown Jr., reside at Long Beach. She is a member of Southport Baptist Church. Students Nominated The Southport-Oak Island Cham ber of Commerce has nominated four South Brunswick High School students for the James B. Hunt Citizen Award. Nominees are Karen E. Blackmon and Gina E. Esscy of Yaupon Beach, Melissa A. Love of Winnabow and Kathryn D. Smith of Lcland. The award established last year by Wake Forest University recog nizes high school sophomores and juniors who arc dedicated to com munity service anH leadership. One student from each of the state's 100 counties is honored, and three students receive scholarships. Winners will be announced by the end of April. Sent To Middle East Sgt. Donna E. Pckock has de ployed to the Middle East with American military forces participat ing in Operation Desert Storm. The daughter of Vivian Sweeney of Sunset Beach and Donald E. Foasc of Morrisvillc, Pa., she is a strategic aircraft maintenance spe cialist at Pittsburgh Air Force Base, N.Y. The operation in the Middle East is the largest deployment of U.S. military forces since Vietnam, in volving more than 460,000 service men and women. The operation is in response to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait and threat to Saudi Arabia. Literacy Council Offers Session A free orientation will be offered Saturday, Feb. 2, for those who want to find out more about the Brunswick County Literacy Council (BCLC) and its efforts to address il literacy at the local level. The overview session is planned from 10 a.m. until noon al the BCLC Hospital Sponsors Annual Health Fair Blood analyses, cholesterol screenings and other health-related tests will be offered at the 10th an nual health fair sponsored by Grand Strand General Hospital Saturday, Feb. 2. The health fair will be open from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Briarcliffe Mall in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. The purpose of the fair is to give people the chance to check their health and learn to manage it suc cessfully. Area residents will be able to check their height, weight and body -fat measurements and take hearing, eyesight, memory and other tests. There will be fees for the choles terol screenings and blood analyses. It is the agcncy's first effort of this kind to acquaint the community with its work. Several volunteers and the non-profit agency's cooidi ?nator, Gladys Wagcnseil, will de scribe the council's objectives, pro grams, membership and varied vol unteer opportunities, as well as in troduce the Laubach method of one on-one tutoring that is emphasized in training reading tutors. They will also answer questions. Attendance at the orientation ses sion will count as training hours to ward Laubach certification for those who later decide to become tutors with the literacy council. Tutoring is the only volunteer op portunity with the council that re quires additional formal training, said Ms. Wagenseil. A 10-hour tutor training work shop is planned Feb. 22 and 23, also at the BCLC office. Hours arc 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, with Rich Dixon as trainer. Those who complete the workshop will be certified to tutor using the Laubach method. Those who plan to sign up for the work shop arc asked to first attend the orientation. Cost for the workshop is S10, which includes all needed materials and refreshments. VFW To Honor Area Soldiers The Holden Bcach Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8866 will hold a flag-raising ceremony and memorial service to honor American troops overseas now fighting agaiasi Iraq in the Persian Gulf, Post spokesman David Bellamy said. The ceremony, set for Saturday, Feb. 2, at 11 a.m. at the Holden Bcach town hall, will pay particular interest to soldiers who are from Brunswick County. The service is open to everyone.
