HEWETT Nearly 24 hours before this coun try's cold war with Iraq escalated into a hot baule, a special prayer meeting at Ce dar Grove Mis sionary Baptist Church recalled prayer meetings of an earlier de cade in its length, attend ance and fervor. The "sweet hour of prayer" for many decades has been reduced to a mere 30 min utes, but not this one on Jan. 15. It lasted a good 15 minutes more than an hour, with the sanctuary com fortably packed. The inspiration flowed as honey, sweet and worshipful. Fellowship after the service was at such a high that people appeared not to want to go home. Attitude Is Positive There seems to me to be a very positive altitude, a spirit of pre serverance and a determination to succeed despite oppressive odds among the youth affiliated with the Christian church statewide. Their dedication to assigned responsibili ty amazes their senior counterpart. This is certainly true of Priscilla Herring, credited by Ocean View Union youth supervisor Arvella Marlowe with founding the youth concert. She is the daughter of the Rev. Moses Clyde Herring of Cedar Grove, pastor of Mt. Minnick Jr.; and Wilmington District Superintendent Sam McMillan. Methodist Leaders Praise Prog ress Of Seaside Church The Rev. C.P. Minnick Jr., bishop of the North Carolina Conference, and the Rev. Sam McMillan, Wilm ington District Superintendent, joined Seaside United Methodist Church Jan. 20 in celebrating the first anniversary of its chartering. Minnick's sermon was one of hope for a people who have been at war in the Middle East, assuring them of Christ's ability to enable his people to move beyond darkness and despair to love and joy and peace, said the pastor. The Rev. Camille Yorkcy Edwards. McMillan's comments reflected on the birth of the Seaside congre gation, which he said had "the best start" of any new church in the con ference. He said Seaside Church has all four of the things required to grow and have a viable ministry: strong pastoral leadership; strong lay leadership; a good location; and a vision of its mission. "Week in and week out you offer exciting and dynamic worship ser vices, month by month you offer meaningful ministry to this commu nity," he said. Concluded McMillan, "1 predict that you will go from victory on to victory and not only become the largest, most effective church in Brunswick County, but by the year 2091, this church will still be mak ing an effective witness to Jesus Christ on this mission field." Lay leaders participating in the service were Percy Bray, Doris Goodrow, Jim Smart, Hilda Mena sian, Ben DeBlois, Ed Bye, John Gaddy and Gcri Piazza. Seaside UMC chartered with 92 members one year ago. During 1990 it received 142 members over all, the most of any church in the district and the highest net gain in the confcrence. Its membership has pledged a budget of more than S 120,000 for the coming year and has plans to build a permanent wor ship facility on N.C. 904. The con gregation presently worships in a former store on N.C. 179 one-quar ter mile cast of its intersection with Four Mile Road. Donde esta el hombre o mujer que conoce o quierre conocer a Dios?
