Those four syllables sum up the advice of former active duty mili tary personnel on ways to support military personnel serving in the Middle East. Speaking at a rally for the troops organized by Brunswick Community College students. Col. William Cock rell, commander of the U.S. Army JROTC program at West Brunswick High School, advised, "My main suggestion is to keep in contact." Many of the 50 or 60 men and women in the audience last Thurs day night have family members or friends seiving in the Middle East. At this stage of the war "keeping in contact" that means letters more than "care" packages, he and others noted, because other needs have higher priority: transportation of men, ammunition, food and then mail. Some military personnel are also in areas where telephones is not readily available to them. Churches, school groups and in dividuals continue to write letters to specific individuals or to "any ser viceman," mail that is routed to sol diers who arc not receiving much mail. "One of the hardest things is to be sitting out there in the desert or on a ship and not have any mail," said Brunswick County Veterans Service Officer Jess Parker. Groups or individuals who wish to write service men and women overseas can obtain names of local residents serving in the war from Parker's Cockrcll's office or from the Brunswick County Veterans Service Office at the county govern ment center in Bolivia. Parker also noted support efforts by local churches for service per sonnel and family members who are stateside ? prayer meetings, prayer lists, support groups. He urged indi viduals to take time to listen to, comfort and encourage neighbors and friends in that situation. Many of Parker's comments echoed those of earlier speakers Sgt. Ray Edwards, a recruiter with the North Carolina National Guard; and Sgt. Dexter Hudson, a recruiter with the U.S. Marine Corps. He urged listeners, "Don't vent your personal politics on the street. During the Vietnam War we almost deserted an entire generation." Instead, suggested Sgt. Dexter Hudson, Write good news." "I'm sure it's a nightmare for them, enduring the heat of the desert by day and the cold by night and going without freedoms," Hud son said. "But they are making a sacrifice to protect our way of life here in America." Parker invited local residents who have a family member serving in the Middle East and need some one to talk to do so. "I'm available any time of day or night to listen and to help." f:on our Top of . the Line Sets! 1 )95 I $4r\nc>r i ? 36?y?LEEP 25 Yr. Warr. ROSEWOOD 432CO/L 30 Yr. Warr. )95 )9o gij $124.
