They earned a grade point average of 3.5 or better while taking 12 to 14 hours of credit, or a GPA of 3.2 or better while taking 15 or more credit hours, with no grade less than a B. Chancellor's list students must earn a 4.0 grade point average and take at least 12 credit hours of coursework. USC Coastal Carolina College is a four-year campus of the Univer sity of South Carolina and is located in Conway, S.C. Kelly Reappointed Dave Kelly of Southport, chair man of the Brunswick Community College Board of Trustees, has been reappointed to North Carolini ans for Com munity Col leges. The purpose sm ? of the group, ** which includes 58 civic and mr business leaders, is to build stale - KELLY wide support for the Commission on the Future of North Carolina's Community Col lege System report. Gaining the Competitive Edge. The Commission recommended that the General Assembly provide an additional $135 million annually to the community college system, to raise its funding to the national av erage. In the 1990-91 state budget community colleges receive only seven cents of every dollar the state spends on education Teachers Honored West Brunswick High School has chosen Craig Morris of Shallotte and Cheri Skaggs of Sunset Beach as employees of the month for February. Morris has been band director at WBHS and Waccamaw Elementary School for four years. The bands have played for community, ath letic and school functions under his direction. Morris also morris helped organize WBHS's annual "Moo Doo Day." He is a member of the Shallotte Volunteer Rescue Squad and Camp United Methodist Cjiurch. Ms. Skaggs teaches music educa tion at WBHS and Waccamaw Elementary. She has directed the school chorus at the N.C. Oyster Festival at Sea side and on local television ap pearances. She attends Living -KArr Faith Church, SKAGGS where she sings and plays the saxo phone. Jenrette Graduates Verncssa A. Jenrcttc of Shallotte recently graduated from Faycueville State University at the university's first winter commencement, held Dec. 18, 1990. Yeager Selected Greg Yeager, son of George and Audrey Yeager of Ash, has been named band person of the week for the West Brunswick High School Band. A junior who plays trumpet, Yea ger was chosen for selling a superb example in the band. Earns UNC-CH Degree Steven Joseph Greenwood of Route 2, Supply, has been awarded a bachelor of arts degree in English from the University of North Caro lina at Chapel Hill. He completed requirements dur ing the fall 1990 semester and was recognized at a Dec. 9 program in Memorial Hall. Driver Selected Cynthia Marlowe of Ash has been selected as January bus driver of the month at West Brunswick High School. Ms. Marlowe drives school bus No. 33 in the Ash com munity. She was chosen for the honor based on her considera tion for students Marlowe and on the job performance. She is a 1976 graduate of WBHS and is married to John A. Marlowe. Their son, Jerome, is a junior at WBHS and plays on the varsity bas ketball team. She is a member of Little Prong Missionary Baptist Church. Eighteen Students Nominated To Attend Governor's School Brunswick County Schools have nominated 18 students to attend Governor's School this summer ? six in academic areas and 12 in the arts, Mary Wolf, pupil-personnel services director. Those selected will participate in a state-sponsored, six-week residen tial study program for outstanding academically gifted students at ei ther Salem College or St Andrews College. LETINO GRISSETT From West Brunswick High, county nominees and their areas are Perty Grissett, sophomore, science; and Lee Letino, sophomore, art. From North Brunswick High the nominees are Charlie Edward Speight, sophomore, and Malik James Flamer, junior, math; and Margaret Christina Dees, sopho more, instrumental music. From South Brunswick the nomi nees arc Ronald Brown II, sopho more, science; Kathryn Smith, ju nior, social studies; Terri Smith, ju nior, science; Karen Blackmon, Leland Town Boar Leland Town Council has hired its first paid employee. Joyce Bragg, deputy clerk for New Hanover County, has been chosen to serve as Leland's first paid clerk. On Feb. 19 Mrs. Bragg will re place Dean Roberts, who is serving as the town's unpaid volunteer clerk. Jane Crowder will continue as Leland's unpaid part-time deputy clerk. Mrs. Bragg is a director of the N.C. Association of County Clerks and past president of the local chap ter of Professional Secretaries Inter national. She has worked for New Hanover County for more than nine years and will continue as deputy clerk on a part-time basis until July 1, when the Leland position will become a sophomore, dance; Christen Walker, sophomore, art; John Midgctt, soph omore, art; Jacqueline Cromurtie, junior, drama; Keith Fullwood, soph omore, instrumental music; Caroline Fletcher, junior, dance; Jamie Big ford, junior, art; and Jason Lanier, Sherry Simmons and Kcrri Knight, sophomores, choral music. Winners will be notified in April. At least two Brunswick County stu dents, and possibly more, will be in vited to attend a Governor's School. In addition to exploring contem porary issues in their area of con centration, students also participate in studies of philosophy, epistemol ogy, ethics and aes'heics, and self in society. Students could be nominated in any of 1 1 area areas of academics or the performing arts. Statewide, 800 rising high school juniors and se niors will be chosen for the pro gram. All nominees are required to meet minimum eligibility requirements, garnering a minimum number of points based on academic perfor mance and performance on standar dized tests. Also, students nominat ed in the performing arts must audi tion at the state level. Brunswick County was allowed to nominate six students in academic areas and 12 in the performing arts. The county nominees were se lected from among 55 students d Hires First Clerk full-time job. Mayor Russell Baldwin said Le land is fortunate to find someone with Mrs. Bragg's experience for the town's first paid employee. "We had 18 outstanding applicants," Baldwin said. "Mrs. Bragg's experi ence gave her the edge."
