Festival Pageant
Seeks Contestants
The N.C. Strawberry Festival
Scholarship Queen and Princess Pa
geant is looking for contestants for
the upcoming event.
Women ages 14 to 22 from
Brunswick, Bladen, Columbus and
Robeson counties are eligible, ac
cording to a Greater Chadbourn
Chamber of Commerce news re
lease.
They will compete Saturday, May
4, at 6:30 p.m. in the West Col
umbus High School Gymtorium.
Women age 14-16 can compete in
the Princess division, and women
age 17-22 can compete in the
Queen division.
Contestants in both divisions will
be judged in interview, sportswear,
talent and evening gown. Twenty
contestants will be accepted in each
division.
The Queen division scholarship
is worth $1,300, and the Princess
division winner will receive a $600
scholarship.

Panel To Discuss Survey's Results
The Brunswick Challenge Com
mittee plans to release Tuesday
morning the results of a drug survey
conducted last summer in the county.
Release of the information is part
of a breakfast meeting set from 7:30
a.m. to 9 a.m. at the Brunswick
County Government Center cafete
ria. Guests at the meeting will in
clude representatives of the Gover
nor's Council on Alcohol and Drug
Abuse and the N.C. Drug Cabinet, as
well as local government officials.
Committee Chairman Jean Parker
said community, business and indus
try leaders will be encouraged to take
a coalition approach to combatting
the local substance abuse problem.
Brunswick Challenge Committee
is a non-profit, countywide volunteer
group working with the challenge of
providing community-based drug
prevention and intervention.

Calabash Elks Sponsoring blood Drive
Calabash Elks Lodge 2679, in
conjunction with the American Red
Cross, will hold its first blood drive

Samuel Swann Chapter of the Col
onial Dames of the 1 7th Century.
The presentation explored the dra
matic changes in government poli
cies and leaders in the Soviet Union,
Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia,
Romania, South Africa and Nicarag
ua in the past 18 months.
Miss Moore's grandmother, Lena
Hawes, was a guest at the recent
meeting in Wilmington.
Causey's mother, Gwcn Causey,
is chapter program chairman, and
his grandmother, Thcodocia Mus
selwhite, was elected new president
at the meeting.
Mary Lou White of Shallotte was
elected as the new vice president.

He spoke from first-hand knowl

Sunset Sands Garden Club plans
to plant shrubbery and plants on the
grounds of the new Sea Trail Pro
perty Owners Association Club
house on Station Trails.
The plans were laid at the club's
January meeting at the home of Bil
lie Younts in Seaside Station.
Program speaker Gerri Piazza
gave an informative demonstration
and talk on painting. She teaches
painting classcs Thursdays at the
Seaside United Methodist Church
building on N.C. 179 near Ocean
Isle Beach.
Members also planned to treat
their husbands to a Valentine's Day
dinner today (Thursday) at the Is

Pilots Present Flag
Representatives of the Pilot Club
of the South Brunswick Islands pre
sented a large U.S. flag to Union
Primary School on Feb. 4, reports
club spokesman Wendy Milazzo.
The presentation coincided with
an official visit to the club by North
Carolina District Governor-Elect
Donna Hamncr of Winston-Salem.
On Feb. 19, the club will move
its meeting place to Autumn Care
nursing center in Shallouc for an
evening of bingo and refreshments
for residents, starting at 6:30 p.m.
Senior Council Meets
All members of the Brunswick
County Senior Council arc asked to
attend the regular meeting Tuesday,
Feb. 19, at 2 p.m., in the cafeteria at
the government center in Bolivia,
said Ouida Hcwctt, president.
Each senior club, organization or
agency is asked to send a representa
tive, along with an updated calendar
of activities planned for the year.
The council meets the third Tues
day of each month.
