Student Winners Advancing To District Aiis Festival Eighteen students from western Brunswick County will advance to district competition Feb. 23 in the N.C. Federation of Women's Clubs annual arts competition. They won blue ribbons in the vi sual and performing arts and litera ture in the local competition held Feb. 4 by the Shallotte Junior Wo men's Club. Participants were seventh grade students and above from Shallotte Middle, Waccamaw Elementary and West Brunswick High schools, said Meleta Humbert, coordinator. PEOPLE IN THE NEWS Endorsed Resolution Of Support For Troops James W. Smith, a commissioner of the Employment Security Com mission of North Carolina, endorsed a resolution of support for U.S. mil itary forces in the Persian Gulf at a meeting Feb. 7 in Raleigh. Smith is owner and operator of Dutchman Creek Acres Real Estate Co. and lives in Southport. He is also an execu tive officer of Local 1838 of the International Longshore man's Associa tion, a master Mason and a member of the South port Historical Society. Department of Community Colleges Professional Program Development Services.
