W? OAi r? r Local Forest Rangers Say Spring Fire Season Coming Another forest fire season is fast approaching, and the N.C. Forest Service says it wants to do its best to make the 1991 season a mild one in Brunswick County. Assistant County Forest Ranger Mitch Pullcn says high winds, low relative humidity and warmer tem peratures make March, April and May the most critical months of the year for hazardous forest Ires con ditions. Pullen said most local woods fires arc caused by debris burns that get out of control and arson. While area residents can't do much to pre vent arson, he said they can do something about debris fires. The ranger suggests county resi dents who burn debris have tools and water on hand to maintain a good fire break. Also, somebody should watch the fire at all times until the embers arc cool. A burning permit is required if burning is to be done between the hours of midnight and 4 a.m. Permits also arc needed for any burning to be done more than 100 feet away from a dwelling or within 500 feet of woodland areas. Depending on where people live in the county, Pullcn said other local burning laws may apply. Most towns have their own ordinances regulating open burning. With the area receiving more than 10 inches of rain in January and similar weather expected this month. Assistant County Ranger Robert Norton said now is a good time to do burning in the yard. Norton said it's best to burn yard waste before the weather turns warmer and drier and the "threat of wildfire increases. For most burning, Norton said waiting three to five days after a rainfall gives the wood enough time to dry out. Piled debris may take longer to dry. To further reduce the threat of woods fires, Pullen said the owners of small woodlands could improve their lots by thinning or removing the less-desirable trees for fuel wood purposes. Crooked, forked, suppressed, dis eased and other poorly-formed trees can be utilized as fuel wood. Pullen said getting rid of them gives the tall, straight trees more room to grow. Some of the types of trees that make good firewood include black locust, hickory, dogwood, black birch, ash, beech, apple, oak, maple and pine. Pullen recommends al lowing the wood to air dry for six to eight months before using it for heating purposes. For more information on wood land fire prevention, burning laws and forest management in Bruns wick County, call 253-5297 and ask to speak with a forest ranger. All 36 restaurants inspcctcd dur ing January by environmental health specialists with the Bruns wick County Health Department earn sanitation grades of "A". The specialists also inspcctcd a number of food stands, meat mar kets and child daycare centers. Sanitation grades for restaurants and food or drink stands arc based on a system of scoring where an "A" is given to scores of 90 percent or better, a "B" to scores of at least 80 percent and less than 90 percent; and a "C" for a score of at least 70 percent and less than 80 percent. The permit would be revoked for any establishment that receives a score of icss than 70 percent.
