TROIANS RIPPED BY FAIRMONT
West Brunswick Rebounds To W hip South Robeson 86-64
BY JOHNNY CRAIG
West Brunswick rebounded from
its worst loss of the prep basketball
season last Tuesday with an 86-64
romp Friday over host South Rob
eson in Waccamaw 2-A Conference
play. Earlier in the week the Trojans
lost their first game of the current
five-game road swing by a nearly
identical 85-64 count.
The Trojans, now 8-2 in the WC
and 16-3 overall, return home
Friday for the first time in three
weeks to host North Brunswick.
West Brunswick visits East Bladen
next Tuesday in its final road game
of the regular season.
"I really didn't know what to ex
pect after the loss to Fairmont
which roughed us up a bit," said
West Brunswick coach Billy Mims
of his team's league win at South
Robeson. "I was pleased with the
way we came back."
South Robeson
After a sluggish opening 12 min
utes, the Trojans came alive with a
second-half rally that began just be
fore the halftime break to pound
South Robeson for the second time
this season, 86-64.
"We looked pretty tight in the
first quarter but midway in the sec
ond period we began executing as
we are used to," said Mims. "We re
ally built a good lead in the third
quarter on the play of Jerome Mar
lowe and James Clarida."
Marlowe and Clarida, a pair of
Trojan reserves, started for the first
time this season to help the team re
group after the loss to Fairmont.
"Both Jerome and James de
served to play because of their per
formances in practice of late. Some
thing needed to be done after our
loss against Fairmont," added
Mims. "Sometime during the later
stages of this season, the conference
tournament or the state playoffs,
we're going to need some extra
people to come in and get the job
done. Giving our reserves the
chance to play tonight will help us
in the long run."
Both teams ended the opening
period in an 18-18 deadlock before
the Trojans inched ahead 41-35 at
the half.
West Brunswick continued to pull
away in the third quarter leading
66-49 and the Trojans outscorcd
South Robeson 20-15 in the final
period.
Ricky Daniels led the Trojans
with 38 points after being held to a
season-low 13 against Fairmont.
Shawn Bowcns added 13 for West
while LaPcriy Hill followed with
eight.
William Odom and Willie Davis
scored 13 points each for South
Robeson (1-7, 5-13) and Tracy
Jacobs added 12.

Fairmont
West Brunswick received its
worst defeat since a 71-48, season
ending loss to South Brunswick on
Feb. 23, 1990, in last Tuesday's am
bush at Fairmont.
Despite the absence of three
starters, including leading scorer
Jonathon Grissctt, the Golden Tor
nadoes (7-3, 17-3) pounced on the
visiting Trojans early for an 85-64
romp to gain a temporary share of
second place in the Waccamaw
Conference.
"This was our worst game of the
year," said Mims. It wasn't bccausc
wc just didn't shoot well or rebound
well ? we just plain didn't get after
people."
"We just didn't husdc nor did wc
play with any intensity. After look
ing at the game films, wc should
have lost by 40 points," said Mims.
Fairmont rolled up a 29-10 lead
in the First quarter while hitting
three of four three-point shot at
tempts.
The Trojans were able to cut into
the Golden Tornado advantage only
slightly in the second period and
trailed 48-32 at the half.
"Wc may have taken them a little
lightly after Finding out they were
missing three starters. But Fairmort
has a pretty deep lineup and it cer
tainly helped them tonight," added
Mims.
The Trojans closcd within 14
points, 61-47, in the third quarter
but Fairmont used a 24-17 scoring
edge in the final period to protect
the win.
"Our reserves played the final
five minutes and did better than our
starters," explained Mims.
Daniels led the Trojans with a
season-low 13 points while Hill and
Bowens followed with 10 each.
Corey Alison led four Golden
Tornadoes in double figures with 19
points followed by Chris Hunt with

South Brunswick used a pair of
league basketball wins over West
Columbus, 79-67, and North Bruns
wick, 74-55, last week to extend its
Waccamaw 2-A Conference lead to
two full games in the loop stand
ings.
The Cougars used the wins to re
main unbeaten in league play and
improve to 10-0 and 16-3 overall.
The remaining members of the
league's first division ? West Brans
wick, Fairmont and Whitcvillc ? all
lost one conference contest last
week to help put South Brunswick
in the driver's scat for its first cage
crown in school history.
West Columbus
It was just the type of game
South Brunswick coach Gene
Doane was afraid of as his Cougars
struggled to edge past the Wacca
maw Conference cellar-dwelling
West Columbus Vikings.
Not until an early fourth-quarter
spurt were the league-leading Coug
ars assured of picking up the win in
a key week in the Waccamaw
Conference cage race.
"We start out with a 13-point lead
and all of a sudden nobody can
make a layup," said Doane. "For the
first time, everybody in the confer
ence is shooting at South Bruns
wick. Thai's something that none of
these kids have experienced."
"We devastated their defensive
press but just made bad judgment in
getting the shots and making the
layups. It's a long season and we've
hit the fiat spot now. We just have
to be ready to come out of this and
be ready to play from here on out in
the sketch, " added Doane.
'This was a tough game for the
kids to get up for. And the worst
thing that could happen is getting
out to a big early lead and every
thing is going smooth. Then all of a
sudden we are trying to make things
happen without playing proper de
fense and executing like we
should."
Sophomore guard Josh White
helped key the early Cougar run
that sent them up 13-0. White
scored seven of the points and
dished out an explosive assist that
forward Greg Williams turned into
an alley-oop slam dunk to the de
light of the South Brunswick crowd.
West Columbus responded with
six straight points of its own and
with 2:30 remaining in the opening
period the Vikings still trailed by
only seven, 17-10.
However, South Brunswick went
on a 8-0 tear keyed by the play of
Mike Cole that sent the Cougars to
a 25-10 lead at the end of the peri
od.
West Columbus' Franklin Mc
Donald scored seven of his 16
points in the second period as the
Vikings struggled to stay within
striking distance of the Cougars.
McDonald converted on a three
point play with 28 seconds remain
ing to cut ihc South Brunswick lead
to 38-3 1 but the Cougars scored the
final four points of the period for a
42-31 halftime advantage.
West Columbus outscored the
Cougars 9-1 in the first 1:37 of the
second half to cut the South
Brunswick lead to one, 43-42.
South Brunswick outscored the
Vikings 8-4 in the final 1:17 of the
third quarter to pull ahead 61-54.
The Vikings' James Greene
scored his only points at the start of
the final quarter to cut the South
Brunswick lead to 61-56 but West
Columbus would never gel closer in
the time remaining.
The Cougars outscored the Vikes
12-1 during the next four minutes to
race to a 73-57 lead and West
Columbus never got closer than 1 1
points in the last three minutes.
White led South Brunswick with
24 points and Williams added 21.
Preston McGriff also scored 13 for
the Cougars.
Kcno Jones scored 20 points and
McDonald 16 for West Columbus
(1-10, 6-12).
South Brunswick also won the ju
nior varsity game, 77-59. Scooter
Moore scored 26 points to lead the
Cougars.
