maining last Friday to give the West
Brunswick girls a 53-52 Waccamaw
2-A Conference basketball win over
visiting South Brunswick in the fi
nal night of the league's regular sea
son.
The win also gave the Lady
Trojans (9-5, 16-6) the county cage
championship after having defeated
South Brunswick in an earlier con
test this season along with winning
both games against North
Brunswick.
Earlier in the week (Tuesday) the
West girls took a 63-47 win over
host East Bladen.
West Brunswick finished the WC
regular season in a three-way tie for
second place with Whitcvillc and
South Brunswick ,?? a!l three ended
with 9c lfiagu- records. Whiteville
received the number ;wo >ced for
the conference tourm. ..era while
South Brunswick drew the number
three position followed by West
Brunswick.
The Lady Trojans lost their first
round tournament game to fifth
place West Columbus 47-37 (see
story this section) on Monday at
Fairmont
West Brunswick, along with
South Brunswick, will still qualify
for the sectional playoffs which be
gin Monday at various sites unless
West Colufnbus, sixth-place South
Robeson, seventh-place East Bladen
or eighth-place North Brunswick
wins the league tournament.

to gain a 53-52 win over the Lady
Cougars before a standing-room-on
ly crowd at the Trojan gym.
Buffkin ana Christy King led the
way for West Brunswick with 19
and 16 points respectively while al
so combining foi io points in the
crucial fourth quarter. King convert
ed on 12 of 17 free throw attempts
to also lead the Lady Trojans at the
foul line.
"We shot 59 percent from the free
throw line which isn't great but cer
tainly a lot better than we have in
some of the games this season,"
said West Brunswick coach Brenda
Council. "South Brunswick's re
bounding killed us. For some rea
son, we just weren't going to the
boards."
"This finishes up our regular sea
son on a three-game winning streak.
Tonight is by far the best we've
played in a good while. We need
play like this as we head into the
state playoffs."
"Playing in front of such a large
crowd tonight kind of made us tight
and tense and caused us to make a
lot ol turnovers early. It certainly
helped being on the home court
though," added Council.

ketball tournament.
Jana Bowen scored 19 points, in
cluding 14 in the first half, to lead
the Lady Vikings (14-9) who ad
vanced to Wednesday's semifinal
round at North Brunswick. Felicia
Everett added 12 for West Co
lumbus.
Becky Buffkin led West Bruns
wick (16-7) with 12 points.
West Columbus led 13-7 in the
first quarter and extended its advan
tage to 28-16 at the half.
The Lady Trojans trimmed the
deficit to 28-20 early in the second
half but West Columbus opened a
39-24 lead by the end of the third
quarter.
West Brunswick outscored the
Lady Vikes 13-8 in the final period
but the rally fell short.

South Brunswick Boys Clinch WC Title Against Whiteville
The South Brunswick boys' bas
ketball team captured the school's
first-ever league cage championship
in last Tuesday's 72-70 edging of
visiting Whiteville in Waccamaw 2
A Conference play.
The Cougars also capped their
newly-claimed league title in last
Friday's 74-72 win over West
Brunswick (see story this section)
which gave South Brunswick (14-0)
a perfect WC record as the regular
season came to a close.
The South Brunswick girls com
pleted the sweep of Whiteville with
a 45-43 in the preliminary game. It
was the Lady Cougars second win
this season over Whiteville.
Preston McGriff scored 21 points
to lead South Brunswick while Josh
White added 19 and Carl Parker 10.
Tony Wilson and Andre Spicer led
all five Whiteville starters in double
figure scoring with 15 points each.
Lamont Smith followed with 13
points while Carlos Baldwin added
12 and Gerald Hemingway 1 1 for the
Wolfpack (7-5, 14-6).
The Cougars led 24-16 in the first
quarter before Whiteville rallied to
grab a 38-37 halftime edge.

15 in the final quarter for the win.
Allison Cumbee scored 12 points
to lead the Lady Cougars while
Shannon Register led the Whiteville
girls with 22.
South Brunswick improved to 9
4 in the WC and 13-9 overall.
Whiteville fell to 7-5 in the league
and 14-6 overall.
