A cold shooting hand dealt West
Brunswick its walking papers from
the state 2-A basketball playoffs last
Thursday as host Jordan- Matthews
ousted the Trojans 58-53.
West Brunswick, eliminated in
the second round of the Eastern 2-A
Sectional IV basketball tournament
semifinals for the second year in a
row, ended its season at a 1 3-year -
best record of 21-6.
Jordan-Matthews, the Central Tar
Heel Conference runnerup. went on
to advance to this week s Eastern 2
A Regional tournament in Green
ville with a 68-64 win over Fair
mont in the sectional finals Satur
day.
The playoff results weren't all
bad for the Trojans last week as
they opened the sectional tourna
ment with an 81-60 win over visit
ing Clayton, the fourth-place team
from the Capital Area Conference.
Ricky Daniels, who scored 28
points to lead the Trojans, was hon
ored at a pregame ceremony when
his jersey, number 50, was officially
retired.
Last month Daniels received an
other honor by being nominated to
the McDonalds High School All
American basketball team.
Jordan-Matthews
An effective Trojan defense
wasn't enough to counter 25 percent
shooting from the field as Jordan
Matthews got balanced scoring
from its starting five players and
ended the West Brunswick cage
season. . ? _ . ,
Jets point guard Randall Brittle
scored 16 points to lead four
Jordan-Matthews players in double
figures. .
"We did some good things defen
sively and forced them (Jordan
Matthews) into a number of turn
overs," said West Brunswick coach
Billy Mims. "We simply could not
put the ball in the basket. Jordan
Matthews is a good team but our in
effective offense couldn't be
blamed entirely on their defense."
"We played hard but didn't get
the balanced scoring we needed
against teams in the playoffs. We
averaged 72 points per game this
season so any urnc iccc^ uur
poncnt under 60 points we've got to
feel good. As a team, we just didn't
rise to the occasion."
Daniels led the way in his final
game in a Trojan uniform with 28
points and 15 rebounds.
The teams battled to a 7-7 tie in a
low-scoring first quarter before the
Trojans scored 20 points in the sec
ond period to take a 27-21 halftimc
advantage.
The West Brunswick lead grew to
nine points in the third quarter be
fore the Jets were able to pull within
38-33 at the end of the period.
Jordan-Matthews then outscored
the Trojans 25-15 in the decisive
fourth quarter to pull out the win.
Lamont Williams, who keyed the
Jets' fourth-quarter charge, scored
IS points to aid the Jordan
Matthews cause followed by Eric
Dark with 12 and Ryan Milliken 10.
LaPerry Hill and Jerry Reaves
were the next highest West Bruns
wick scorers with six points cach.

Clayton
The Trojans advanced from the
opening round of the state playoffs
for the sccond straight year with last
Tuesday's 81-60 thumping of visit
ing Clayton.
West Brunswick relied on a 31
point fourth quarter to break the
game open and shake off the Comet
upset bid.
"The final score was no indica
tion of how close the game really
was," said Mims following the con
test. "Aldwin Lance and Ricky
Daniels both had good games but it
was Adam Johnson and Jimmy
Grissett (up from junior varsity
team) who came in and settled
things down for us after a rough
opening."
"We had some players who
weren't holding up their end of
gameplan and we talked about it at
halftime. We came out in the second
half ready to play and by the final
quarter we really looked good."
Clayton's 3-2 zone defense
worked to near perfection in the
first half.
The Comets led twice in the first
quarter before Daniels scored on a
layup to give the Trojans a 16-14
lead at the end of the period. Tbe 6
foot-7 point guard scored 13 of his
28 points in the quarter including
two on a thundering slam dunk off a
steal with 1:30 left
The lead changed hands six times
in the second quarter until Shawn
Bowens sent the game to a 27-27
deadlock at the half with a free
throw with 54 seconds remaining.
The Trojans opened the sccond
half with six unanswered points for
a 33-27 lead on the scoring of
DOwcuS, Runts OIIU LoniiiC miicii
ell.
The West Brunswick lead grew to
10 points, 41-31, on Hill's layup
with 4:49 to play in the third quarter
before the Coir:u; staged a brief
rally.
Back-to-back Nilous Banks field
goals and a Chris Watson layup got
Clayton within 43-39 with 2:56 to
play in the quarter.
The Comets scored their final
three points of the period at the free
throw line to stay within 50-44 at
the end of the quarter.
West Brunswick opened the final
period in the same fashion it opened
the second half as the Trojans
scored nine straight points for a 59
44 lead with 5:26 to play.
West Brunswick went on a 14-0
