SPORTING SCENE
Earlier Kickoff Times Set For Conference Football Games
BY JOHNNY CRAIG
The Waccamaw 2- A Conference made a good choice at the league's
winter meeting at Fairmont last week by moving up the starting time of
loop football games to 7:30 p.m.
Most prep leagues across the state, including the Waccamaw
Conference, have traditionally begun football games at 8 p.m.
However, a handful of altercations among fans at prep games in the
state during the last few seasons have made the North Carolina High
School Athletic Association consider moving all gridiron contests to
7:30 p.m.
The Midcastem 4-A Conference, which includes all three
Wilmington high schools, has begun its football games at 7:30 p.m. for
many years.
While prep football fans arc well-behaved in this area considering
crowd behavior in other parts of the state, the Waccamaw Conference
has made a good move to act on the matter rather than react.
Look for most other conferences throughout the state to voice simi
lar opinions as the WC during the remaining months of the current
school years.
Another football proposal was adopted at the league meeting con
cerning the change of possession. With the new rule, the game clock
will stop on the change of possession and will start with the next snap
of the ball. In previous years the clock has started as soon as possession
took place and before the ball was snapped.
In other business, the league unanimiously voiced concern with offi
ciating.
The Waccamaw Conference will be sending a letter to NCHSAA su
pervisor of officials Dick Knox with recent problems league members
have enountered. Among the problems are attitude of the officials'
booking agent on telephone calls and confidentiality. For example, a
school calls with an officiating complaint, the game official knows
about the call immediately.
Also, the league feels that officials are sent too often to the same
school and that officials are asked to call too many local games.
Easter Tourney Returns To West
West Brunswick will host its own Easter holiday baseball tourna
ment beginning next Wednesday when three prep teams from South
Carolina visit the Trojan park.
Participating in the four-team tourney will be Chapman (Inman,
S.C.), Byrnes (Duncan, S.C.) and Chesnee, S.C. along with the host
Trojans. ?
West Brunswick will meet Chapman in the tournament opener at 4
p.m. followed by the Byrnes vs Chesnee matchup at 7 p.m.
The tournament championship and consolation games will be held
on Friday.
Between the two days of tournament play. West Brunswick will
travel to South Robeson for a Waccamaw 2-A Conference game with
the Mustangs on Thursday.
This year marks the first time West Brunswick has hosted its own
Easter baseball tournament since the early 1980s.
The Trojans have participated in a number of other spring tourneys
since then including the eight-team Sea Shell Invitational held during
the Easter break at UNC-Wilmington.
