Waccamaw On Its Way To Raleigh For State History Bowl ? Again BY SUSAN US1IKR A team from Waccamaw Elemen tary School will head to Raleigh in May to compete in the state History Bowl for the third consecutive year. Waccamaw's eighth graders best ed South Brunswick Middle School, Lcland Middle School and Burgaw Middle School to emerge as win ners of a three-county Fort Fisher/ Brunswick Town State Historic Site History Bowl. The competition was held Mon day at Fort Fisher State Historic Site in New Hanover County. The winning team of Sidney Long, Rebecca Hughes, Mclanic Phillips, Blair Milligan and Adam Babson won $100 to spend as they like, a trophy, p'aque and certifi cates from both the Department of Cultural Resources and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. They will also get a pizza party, said their coach, social studies teacher Mary Katherine Griffith. "They're a very good team," she said. "ITiey are well balanced." The annual competition, sponsor ed by the Division of Archives and History, N.C. Department of Cultur al Resources, promotes interest in North Carolina history. Local con tests are held by the state's historic sites, with Brunswick Town and Fort Fisher co-sponsoring the Cape Fear area bowl. This year's contest featured four schools from Brunswick County and two each from New Hanover and Pender counties. Waccamaw team members will spend the next six weeks preparing for state competition, where ques tions will span the state's 200-year history, with special emphasis on the state's historic sites. For the past two years Wacca maw's team has placed second in South Brunswic Brunswick County schools con tinue to announce honor rolls for the fourth six-weeks grading period. Those earning all A's are listed on the A Honor Roll while students earning all A's and B's are on the A B Honor Roll. Last year, said Ms. Griffith, Waccamaw, with few er than 500 students in grades kin dergarten through eight, was the smallest school entered in the event. In claiming Waccamaw's latest county/regional victory, the team posted its highest scores ever, Ms. Griffith said. Waccamaw scored 1,140 points to South Brunswick's 210; 1,170 to Leland's 285; and in the finals, 905 to Burgaw's 320. Asked the hardest question posed, Ms. Griffith replied, "They couldn't come up with one." However, students said they did notice a larger number of "open ended questions" than in the past. One, for example, asked students where Vcrrazano explored. The cor rect answer: Not just the Cape Fear River or Cape Fear coast, but the Carolina coast from the Cape Fear River to what is now Swansboro. Shallottc Middle, which lost in the first round to Lcland Middle, was represented by Aaron Hankins, Jamie Dennis, Elizabeth Dctrie, Cicely Williams and Erin Redwinc. Next year, said first-time bowl coach Barbara Holcombc, Shallot te's team will be ready. "We were weak on the state historic site infor mation," she said. "We're going to work on it for next year." Other teams competing included Trask and Williston schools in New Hanover County and Atkinson in Pender County. k Middle Announces Honor Rolls Chism, Clark Cowan, John Crccch, Rosalayla Douglas, Amber Dowl ing, TifTiny Drew, Kelly Falor, Carol Ann Finucan, Christy Gain vors.
