AT HICKMAN'S CROSSROADS
Brunswick Plantation Project
Gets Go-Ahead From Planners
BY TERRY POPE
A 596-acre development under
conslruction at Hickman's Cross
roads south of Shallotte will feature
a series of lakes, an 18-holc golf
course and approximately 664
homes when completed.
The Brunswick County Planning
Board last Wednesday approved
plat proposals for two sections of
Brunswick Plantation subdivision
and golf course, a project planned
by developers Mason Anderson,
Jimmy McLamb, WJ. McLamb and
George A. Sloan III, operating un
der the name Caw Caw Land Corp.
Last fall the development group
reserved the subdivision's name and
obtained the planning board's ap
proval to begin laying out roads and
drainage lines.
Plats approved last week allow
the development of the first phase,
which consists of two residential
sections and an 18-hole golf course.
The 99 Sots in section one will have
a minimum lot size of 75 feet by
140 feet Section two will consist of
61 patio home sites averaging 60
feet by 110 feet each.
Company agent Rick Tompkins,
a registered land surveyor, told the
board that the patio home sites will
border No. 5 School House Road
N.W. (RPR 1305). The other home
sites and 18-hole golf course will
stretch from west of U.S. 17 to
School House Road.
Tompkins said his clients are ne
gotiating with N.C. Department of
Transportation officials to build a
turn lime on U.S. 17 at the entrance
to the development.
The golf course will be designed
by Willard J. Byrd and Associates.
Two smaller sites by a club house
will be reserved for multi-family
development. Walter Marley, Bruns
wick County soil scientist, told the
board that a central sewer system
must be used on a vast majority of
the lots in Phase One.
The company proposal indicated
the site will be served by a water
and sewer system.
The planning board last week al
so gave approval to a subdivision
consisting of 21 lots along Kirby
Brunswick
Business Service
Road S.W. near Holden Beach.
A plat for Ridge Forest Subdivi
sion was originally approved in No
vember 1983, but only one phase of
the project was ever officially filed
by the owner, Tom Hcwett.
A plat was filed for Phase One,
which consists of nine lots, said the
applicant's agent, Thomas Moiban.
He presented the proposed plat for
Phase Two, which consists of 12
lots, each 60 feet by 150 to 188 feet
in depth.
The development will connect
with Four Winds subdivision and
border Turkey Trap Swamp.

Business After Hours
Includes Slide Show
BY SUSANNE D. SARTELLE, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT
South Brunswick Islands Chamber Of Commerce
Spring is a busy lime for the chamber. We have several projects and
programs going on to benefit a variety of people and
businesses
First, you don't want to miss Business After
Hours Thursday evening. From 5:30 to 7 p.m. the
mixer is being held for all chamber members and
their guests. Sponsored by United Carolina Bank,
Businccs After Hours will be held at Bent Tree
Plantation, on Highway 179 between Ocean Isle
Beach and Shallotte. It's free, and door prizes will be
given away.
You've heard a lot of talk about the 1-40 Blitz,
and at Business After Hours you can see what it was
all about for yourself. A brief presentation will be
made, including an entertaining slide show.
Coming up in April, the chamber will sponsor its second
Appreciation Luncheon in recognition of National Professional
Secretaries Day. The April 24 luncheon will be at Sea Trail's Jones/Byrd
Clubhouse. Last year, more than 80 ladies attended and the event was
great fun. Again this year, there will be entertainment as well as door
prizes, and we guarantee those in attendance will be treated like queens!
This luncheon is not just for "secreiaripc " iiv r~- -ccrcusriw, ck.i
vai wuikcis ana administrative assistants ? the ones that we know really
run the office. So, show them how much you appreciate ihem by sending
ti:nm to the luncheon. Chamber members will receive invitations in the
mail.
About a week after the luncheon, there will be a banquet to honor
small business in Brunswick County. As usual, awards will be presented
in several categories, but there is something new this year. One
Brunswick County business owner or manager will be named Small
Business Person of the Year. Have you nominated someone? Call the
chamber for nomination forms.
My columns to come will detail more spring activity. Get in on the
action ? there's enough to go around!
???**
Last week when I read my column, 1 realized that a very important
name had been left off the 1-40 Blitz team list. Phil Morgan, please ac
cept my apologies. Without Phil and his camera we would have no visu
al record of die Blitz. This man was everywhere and he did a great iob.
