South's Doane, Isenberg Named County Cage Coaches Of Year BY JOHNNY CRAIG South Brunswick's Gene Doane and Mike Isenbcrg are at opposite ends of a coaching lifetime but both garnered Brunswick County boys and girls Basketball Coach of the Year respectively after leading their teams to rccord-sctting seasons. Doane, a veteran of 30 years of coaching on the high school hard wood, guided the Cougars to their best record in school history (25-4) this season as South Brunswick also won its first sectional championship in the Eastern 2-A Sectional III tournament earlier this month. In addition. South Brunswick be came the first Waccamaw Con ference team to go through the league regular season unbeaten (14 0) while the Cougar? also picked up their third straight county title. Meanwhile, Isenberg, in his first year, led his Lady Cougar team to a similar record finish as the South girls went from seventh place to a share of second in the WC regular season (9-5 league record). The Lady Cougars also recorded a school-best 17-11 mark while also winning their first-ever Waccamaw Conference tournament and slate playoff game. The 17 wins represented more victories than South girls teams have recorded in the last three sea sons combined. "The biggest factor of our suc cess this season was getting the girls to believe in themselves," said Isenberg, who is also a Southport attorney. 'They had to realize that they were good enough to have a successful season if only they had the desire." "I've told the girls that the pres sure is on them now because going from seventh to second is a big step and it will be harder to improve the next year. Our goal for the next year is to continue to improve as a team." Isenberg, in his first year at the high school level, has coached at South Brunswick Middle School as well as youth league baseball and basketball. "It was a great year," said Isenberg. "I already miss it. This was a special group of girls. I can't wait to get started again." Doane, one of the top 10 win ningest prep coaches in North Car olina, equalled a personal-best sea son with the Cougars' 25 victories. The Cougars won 20 straight games before losing to Beaufort Northside in the Eastern 2-A Regional tournament semifinals. "We won't be satisfied until we win the state title," said Doane re garding the success of recently com pleted season. "The people in this area no longer feel that they can not win in basketball. This program is a winner now but it will take a lot of hard work to go beyond this level." "The type of season we have stirs up a lot of enthusiasm which feeds over into the school and causes a lot of positive things." "We need to keep this enthusiasm going. U gives everyone involved something to rally behind," added Doane. "I thank everyone, even the ones remotely associated to the basket ball program, for their support of what we have done." The Cougars have now won 45 games in the last two seasons. Doane guided South Brunswick to a 9- 1 1 record in his first season five years ago and followed with marks of 8-11 and 11-12 and guided the Cougars to their to a 20-6 finish last year, the school's first-ever 20 win season.
