Old Baldy, considered the oldest lighthouse on the North Carolina coast, is the third lighthouse to be featured in the annual waterfowl stamp print program, according to the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. Wildlife artist Phillip Crowe of Franklin, Tcnn., painted this year's print after a trip to Smith Island on the mouth of the Cape Fear River. The waterfowl stamp soon will be available from commission hunt ing and fishing license agents. Fred Taylor of Ash and Wayne Miracle of Soulhport arc the local agents. Art dealers also will begin taking orders for the 1991 duck stamp print, which will be on sale through Dec. 31. 1992. After that time, remaining duck stamp prints will be destroyed to in crease the value of prints that col lectors have purchased. North Carolina's duck stamp pro gram is right years old. Waterfowl hunters in the state have been re quired to buy a state waterfowl li cense in addition to the federal wa terfowl stamp since 1987. Money generated from the sale of waterfowl licenses and print royal ties goes into the commission's spe cial waterfowl fund, which has helped purchase thousands of acres of wetlands in the state. The money helps meet the state's financial obligations in implement ing the North American Waterfowl Management Plan, a news release from the commission indicated. The season is here! This winter has been one of the mildest ever. A quick check with the local weather station confirmed that the temperature dropped below 32 de grees a total of 18 limes during the past winter; far off the average of 44 times per winter. Charter boats have already begun daily charters. Last week one captain reported excellent catches of king mackerel, pink snap per and black sea bass in the 30- to 40-mile range off CAPTAIN Ocean Isle Beach. JAMIE'S The first weekend in February 1 took my first trip OFFSHORE of the year aboard my boat, "Caribbean Soul." Long- FiSHING time fishing friend David Rourk accompanied me on REPORT our planned overnight trip. We left Shallottc Inlet around two in the afternoon, and set our Loran coordinates for a good rocky bottom area 52 miles off Shallottc Inlet. The forecast was for light winds and slight seas during the next 24 hours. One hour into the trip we were working a three- to four-foot northeast swell. David and I both had thoughts of turning back but we also knew that the forecast was for improving conditions, so we kept our course. As we set our anchor on our targeted spot, the sun dipped beneath the horizon. The three- to four-foot swell had bixomc a steady five-foot swell. I remember saying something about the weatherman, but I had better not repeat that in this article. That night we caught snapper, ambcrjack, sea bass and dolphin. Yes, dolphin in February! The water temperature was 73 degrees. The sea conditions started improving the following morning and by 10 a.m. we started seeing other fishing boats moving into the area. The return trip proved to be the highlight of the whole adventure. David and I noticed a great number of birds working an area 21 miles from Shallottc Inlet. As I turned the boat to get a closer look at this activity I was stunned at what I saw. Three-foot tall dorsal fins working in and out around the birds! As the "Caribbean Soul" inched closer we determined that there were six sharks-thc smallest being around 20 feet long and the largest in the 30 foot range. These creatures were very curious and swam right next to the boat. Luckily we had brought along a camera and David managed a few photographs. "Hie following day I spoke with a marine biologist from Fort Fisher and he explained what we had encountered. They were Baskin sharks. Their average length is 30-35 feet, and they feed only on plankton. The week of Easter should provide excellent offshore fishing. The gulf stream has moved to within 15 miles of Frying Pan Tower. This should make catches of kings, wahoo, tuna and dolphin plentiful. That's about all for now. Keep watching for the offshore fishing report in your weekly Beacon. Egg Hunt Scheduled An Easter egg hunt for children will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Pro Tec golf practice range near Brick Landing. Children may bring their own eggs, but the range will also provide eggs, said Kelly Beclcr, manager and promotional director. Prizes will be awarded and free refreshments.
