Symbols Of Easter Old And New BY BILL FAVER Most of us are aware of Easier as the principal festival in the Christian Church. Easter is the oldest observance by Christians other than Sunday it self. Like many other church cel ebrations, Easter was transformed by the early Christians from an age-old pagan festival and given new meaning after the resurrec tion of Christ. Many of the sym bols from the pagan festival re main, though they, too, may have new meanings. Some of these FAVER symbols arc very familiar to us along the coast. Easter took its name from the Saxon goddess, "Oestre," who was goddess of spring and associated with the springtime sacrificial festival. The moon hare was an animal sacred to the goddess and thus became associated with the springtime event. Bcowolf re ferred to a similar Indian goddess named Kali. Bunnies, eggs, shells and flowers were tied to the festivals before Easter became a Christian observance. Easter bunnies and eggs have been inseparable. Eggs, as a symbol of rebirth, were laid by the Easter bunny the night before Easter for those children who had been good during the year. Beginning as an early German custom, the Easter bunny has continued with little change, though many of the eggs in the Easter basket have turned to chocolate and marshmallow! In some of the 16th century churches eggs were viewed as symbols of fertility. One observance was "creeping to the cross" with eggs and apples, the sym bol of fruition. This was a penitential experience in which carpets were laid on the cold marble floors of the churches and participants crawled on hands and knees up the aisle to the altar cross. Flowers, particularly bulbs like tulips, daffodils, lilies, hyacinths, and narcissus have long been associ ated with springtime and Easter. Long before floral commercialization, these symbols of awakening, re birth, and resurrection were appropriate for spring and Easter. For ages the arrival of springtime flowers has been eagerly awaited, just as we do this year! Other symbols associated with Easter and Spring arc butterflies, baby chicks or ducklings, sunrises and shells. The metamorphosis of the caterpillar changing into a beautiful butterfly is symbolic of resurrection from the grave. Chicks and ducklings are probably outgrowths of the egg themes or rebirth. Shells were more a sign of the quest for eternal life and new life. As we welcome springtime and new and old friends Ihis Easter, we have the opportunity to expci. ence some of the symbols of Easter that have had meaning for people down through the ages. Look around you and celebrate the newness of life in this new season. LOG 92.351 MIIFS ?tJ *? Now Stringfield is suing the man he says built the fireplace, asking for more than $50,000 to pay for the home that was under construction, but about 90 percent complete when the fire occurred Jan. 15. Stingfield filed a lawsuit in Brunswick County Superior Court Friday against Eddie A. Bryant of Brunswick County. Stingfield was building th?. hnmc. himself off of Bell Swamp Road at Route 1, Winnabow. Neighbors re ported the fire around 4 a.m. and 12 volunteers from Winnabow and Bo livia fire departments responded. Brunswick County Emergency Management Coordinator Cecil Lo gan reported the fire had probably been burning two or three hours be fore it was discovered. Logan said Stingfieid had apparently used a wood-burning heater insidr the home to keep it warm so a floor covering could be put down. Stringfield claims he contracted with Bryant in March 1990 to build the chimney and flue. According to a report filed by Winnabow Volunteer Fire Depart ment Chief David Short Sr., the cause of the fire was a cracked flue liner that ignited a wall behind the fireplace. Short referred the fire for further investigation to the Bruns wick County fire marshal, Logan. A copy of Short's report was in cluded with the lawsuit Stringfield said he told the defendant about the i blueprints for the house, which cal led for a two-inch space for insula n s .t- - - j:. The lawsuit claims the flue liner cracked and ignited with a wood wall stud, which was touching the flue, and a wood board that was left in the wall near the flue. It claims the touching wood stud and board was the direct cause of the fire. Stringfield claims the chimney was built in violation of the county building code ana that the defendant was negligent in his work on the chimney. He is asking for a jury trial.
