Takes Trojan Baseball Tourney Chapman, S.C. defeated Chcsnce, S.C. 11-3 in a rain-shortened, four inning contest last Friday to take the championship of the first Beach Diamond Classic prep baseball tournament at West Brunswick. Byrnes, S.C. edged the host Trojans 8-5 in the consolation game. In first-round action, Chapman scorcd five runs in ihc fourth inning for an 8-5 win over West Brunswick and Chcsncc ripped Byrnes 9-2. "We played good for six innings but, as has been the case with nearly every game this season, we had one bad frame that cost us the game," said West Brunswick coach Mike Aldcrson. "Wc had 11 hits in each tournament game which is enough to win. We just continue to make mental mistakes such as letting the ball get hit over the head of our out fielders, not making the right plays and hobbling ground balls." TROJANS FALL ? Bryan Fleming Nicks off from a pitch in during the Trojans' 8-5 loss to Chapman, S.C. in the opening game of the Reach Diamond Classic baseball tournament last Thursday at West Brunswick. Fleming and the Trojans resume Waccamaw 2- A Conference play Tuesday hosting West Columbus at 7 p.m. "Wc just need to find the right combination and got mentally into the game. All this needs to happen quickly bccausc we begin confer ence play next week after the Easter break and we won't get any more open dates for preparation." Highlighting the tournament for the Trojans was the play of Aldwin Lance and Brian Alderson, both of whom were named to the all-tour ney team. Lance, a junior centcrficldcr, went 4-for-8 in the two games while Alderson pitched a complete game in the consolation loss to Byrnes and went 3-for-7 at the plate. Ald erson is a starter at shortstop when not pitching. The tournament competition should help the Trojans as they pre pare for 11 straight conference games in the final half of the sea son. "Byrnes is the defending Beach Blossom 3-A Conference champion and will compete for its league title again this year," said Alderson. "Chcsncc and Chapman arc both members of the Appalachian 2-A Conference and will challenge for the league championship. Chcsncc has traditionally always had a strong baseball program but Chap man has beat them twice this season including the tournament win."
