Births Are Announced Rhodes Vance and Teresa Rhodes of Boiling Spring Lakes have an nounced the birth of their first child, Ashland Dawn Rhodes. She was born April 5 at 2:39 a.m. at The Brunswick Hospital, weigh ing in at 8 pounds. She was 20 inch es long. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Sipe of Newton, Patricia Kennedy of Louisburg and Colleen Rhodes, also of Newton. Great grandparents include M. Hathaway of Bailey, Dorolhy Jones of Canton and Selma Ruth Rhodes of Mays ville. Mitchell Rodney Mitchell and Batonya Jcnrctte of Shallottc have announc ed the birth of their first child, Courtney Salisa Mitchcll. She was born at 1:58 p.m. April 4 at The Brunswick Hospital, weigh ing 6 pounds, 14 ounces. Grandparents are Willia Mac Jcnrctte and Olden Jcnrctte. Virgin ia Graham is her great-grandmother. CLUB BRIEFS VFW Posts Honor Volunteers VFW posts at Calabash and Holden Beach are planning an open house to honor volunteers who helped the United States and her al lies with the quick and decisive vic tory in Operation Desert Storm. The open house is scheduled Sunday, April 21, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at Calabash VFW Post No. 7288 at Trader's Village. The local VFW posts will cele brate the volunteer support of troops and their families and encourage continued volunteering in the com munity, said Holden Beach VFW Post Commander Addison Hayes. President George Bush has pro claimed April 15-26 as Points of Light Celebration of Service, a time for Americans to honor people who arc meeting today's critical social challenges through volunteering. Elks Install Officers Calabash Elks installed their newly elected officers in an April 7 ccrcmony at the lodge. The gavel was passed from out going exalted ruler Aram Noorigian to incoming exalted ruler Sky Bramley in a 35-minutc ceremony attended by 75 Elks and their ladies, said spokesman John F. Zicfcl. In addition to Bramley, the new officers are as follows: Walter Hill, esteemed loyal knight; Skip Smith, esteemed lecturing knight; Jack Owen, secretary; George Maloney, treasurer; Les Whaley, tiler; and A1 Decker, five-year trustee. Lee Carlson served as master of ceremonies, with Bob Snyder giv ing the invocation. A social fol lowed the ceremony. Since its chartering seven years ago the lodge has grown to 388 members who are involved in nu merous civic activities in the area. Town Creek VRS Serving Dinners Town Creek Volunteer Rescue Squad will sell fried chicken and barbecue pork dinners Saturday, April 20, starting at 1 1 a.m. The chicken plate will also in clude potato salad, green beans and rolls, while the barbecue dinner in eludes cole slaw, candied yams and hushpuppies. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William W. Hines of Longwood. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Wickcl of Vcro Bcach, Fla. The Rev. Clarence Richardson officiated. Wedding music was pro vided by Doris Rcdwine, pianist; and soloists Lewis Ward and Sharon Benton. The bride was given in marriage by her parents. She wore a white organza gown with sweetheart neckline, Juliet sleeves trimmed in chantilly lace and iridescent beads and pearls. The basque waist flowed into a full gathered skirt with scattered ap pliques of lace and pearls. The skirt extended into a three-tiered lace chapel-length train. She wore a two-tiered walking length veil of illusion with a pouf on top and a band of pearls, irides cent beads and white roses with streamers of beads and lilies of the valley. The bride carried a cascading bouquet of pink roses, alstromcria, miniature white daisies, white car nations and trailing ivy. Teresa Brunson of Ash was maid of honor. She wore a long pink dress with a scooped high front, sweetheart neckline and fitted V waistline. Iridescent braid trimmed the nccklinc and sleeves. Bows and pearls accented the shoulders and back waistline. Bridesmaids wore identically styled gowns of teal and carried lace fans with white miniature daisies, pink carnations and teal daisies with teal and pink streamers. The bridesmaids were Ann Giacoman of Wilmington, cousin of the bride; Julie Babson of Ash; and Amber Grissctt of Grisscttown. Lindscy Evans, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Evans of Shallottc, was the flower girl. Tyler Sims, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Sims of Grissettown, was ring bearer. Paul Wickel of South Setuckct, N.Y., was his brother's best man. Ushers were Tommy Coleman of Zcbulon; Russell Hincs of Longwood, brother of the bride; and Paul Benton of Greensea, S.C., cousin of the bride. After the ceremony the bride's parents hosted a reception in the church fellowship hall. Jean Blake, Patsy Hughes and Mary Carter as sisted. The bride is a 1988 graduate of West Brunswick High School and attended Southeastern Community College in 1989. She plans to fur ther her education in Raleigh. Rug Hookers Plan Open House Area residents will get to see the creations of 12 rug hookers from across North Carolina and a master teacher at a May 1 open house. The date marks the midpoint in an April 29- May 3 master hooking workshop offered by Ramona Mad dox of Chattanooga, Tenn. Among those attending are three local rug makers, Virginia Loester and Ruth Hood of Sunset Beach and Jean Miller of Ocean Isle Beach. The rug hookers' works in pro gress and other pieces they have completed will be displayed at the open house, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, at 301 Ocean Boulevard West, Holden Beach.
