Lady Trojans Fall To West Columbus, North Brunswick West Brunswick lost a pair of Waccamaw 2-A Confcrcncc softball games to West Columbus and North Brunswick last week while drop ping from a three-way tie for first place in the league standings. West Columbus took a 15-7 win last Tuesday and North Brunswick managed a 6-5 edging of the Lady Trojans on Friday. The win gave West Columbus (8 3) sole possession of first place in the conference while West Brunswick dropped to 6-5 in the league and 10-7 overall. The Lady Trojans visit South Brunswick on Friday at 4 p.m. in their final regular-season contest. North Brunswick West Brunswick's Tonya Long had two hits and freshman pitcher Ellen Wyemms tossed a six-hitter in her first game but it wasn't enough as the Lady Scorpions scored three times in a key third-inning uprising to escape with the win. North Brunswick improved to 8 4 in the league to close within a half-game of first-place West Columbus. The Lady Trojans arc among a four-team chase for third placc in the league with all squads battling with identical 6-5 confcrcncc records. West Columbus Winning pitcher Melissa Hardin and Clem Martin both went 3-for-5 at the plate in leading West Columbus to its 15-7 win over the host Lady Trojans. Martin blasted two home runs in cluding a three-run shot in the fourth inning. Nicolc Cooper also had two hits in five trips for the Lady Vikes. West Columbus scored eight runs in the first two innings and added five more in the fourth to remain on top in the battle for the league championship. Perry Culpepper and Long both went 2-for-3 for West Brunswick and losing pitcher Jenny Judah drove in four runs. Both Long and Judah belted home runs. W.Columbus 350 500 2-15-19-3 W. Sonya Kennedy had two hits in cluding a double for North Brunswick (8-4) while Tabby King also had a pair of hits with a solo home run. Losing pitcher Rhonda King had idy Scorps 15-14 a double, Angie Goddard also had two hits including a double and Dawn Sholar added a triple. Tonya Jones led Whiteville (5-6) going 3-for-4 with a double and a triple and LaShanta Godfrey and Angela Slater both had two hits. The Trojans opened the dual team state play offs Monday with a 9-0 loss to powerful C.B. Aycock. However, six West players were among the field that opened the 1-A ? 2-A Eastern Regional individual championship tournament Wednesday at UNC-Wilmington. Regional play continues to day (Thursday) with all singles and doubles semifinal and finalists advancing to next week's state championship tourney at Chapel Hill. Stanley-Hardy Seeded In Regional Tourney West Brunswick's Jody Dale and Allen along with South Brunswick's Ryan Yount and Jason Folding participated in the opening round of the regional tournament that began yesterday (Wednesday) in Wilmington. Among the doubles field were the Trojan teams of Raford Stanley-Lamar Hardy, seeded sixth and Jon Dimmcry-Bcnji Mankin. Mankin replaced Michael Sellars who injured his wrist last Sunday while practicing. South teams in the event were Andy Martin Mike Zeoli and Shane Vannoy-David Cureton. The top singles seeds for the tournament were defending regional champion Chad Mcdlin (C.B. Aycock) at number one, David Valenliner (East Bladen) at two, Jonathan Jackson (Saint Pauls) at three, Dwayne Bailey (C.B. Aycock) at four and 1990 scmifinalist Gary Mattes (Lcjcune) at num ber 5. Valentiner finished singles play undefeated in Waccamaw Conference play. Bailey was the number two singles player at Aycock and Jackson's only singles losses this spring camc at the hands of 4-A opponents. Top doubles seeds for the toumcy were Taylor Davis Brinson (James Kenan) at number 1 , Chad Lewis-Mark Willis (Clinton) at two. Malt Hughes Sloan Rogers (C.B. Aycock) at three, Dcmpsey Smith-Brandon Parker (Saint Pauls) at four, David McCaw-Jason Shclbomc (Whiteville) at five and West Brunswick's Stanley-Hardy at number six. South Brunswick Raford Stanley, Jody Dale, Michael Sellars and Benji Mankin were all singles winners against the Cougars but it took a doubles victory by Stanley-Lamar Hardy to give West its 5-4 win and a sweep of South Brunswick this spring. RECREATION BRIEFS 22 Union Students In Project Fitness Twenty-two students ages 7 through 9 from Union Primary School recently competed in Project Fitness, a track and field competi tion sponsored by the Brunswick County Board of Education. Earning first place in the 50-yard dash were Corey Daniels, Leon Bcsscnt, Lashanda Hill and La shanda Stephens, according to the school newsletter. Claiming second place prizes were Robey Hcavcncr, curl-ups; Sam Bernard, 600-yard run; and Ariental Fullwood, shuttle run. Finishing in third place were Missy Frink, curl-ups; Ian Knott, pull-ups; Aaron Watson, 600-yard run; Tamara Stanley, broad jump; and Justin Bryant, shuttle run. Also participating were Lajuan Daniels, Iris Scherer, Dana Stanley, Will Gore, Terry Evans, Corey Hill, Crystal Whitesides, Angela Mara gliotti, Tara Champion and Elisha Bernard. Drama Camps Planned The Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor two creative dramatic day camps this summer for children ages 10 to 17. Participants will be involved in a four-day instructional program and a performance for the general public. The cost of the week-long day camp is S12 per person. Camp will be held Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. until noon. Dates for the day camps are June 24-27 at South Brunswick High School and Aug. 5-8 at West Brunswick High School. Children interested in attending must register and pay at least two weeks before camp begins. For in formation, contact Emma T. Mc Graw at 253-4357. Van Camps Set Swimming, fishing, arts and crafts, nature walks, field trips and other youth activities will be offered this summer when the Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department sponsors four weeks of van camp. The weekly fee is S45, which covers activities and one T-shirt for the first week of participation. Spe cial field trips will cost extra. Noble Wins Billy Noble of Shallotte took first placc in his division at the N.C. Junior Olympic Wrestling State Championship May 4 at Gardner Webb College at Boiling Springs. Noble competed in the 88-pound weight class in the school boy divi sion. Blake Hobbs of Lcland took sec ond placc at 1 54 pounds in the cadet division. County resident Dean Bal lard also competed. All three wrestle for Coastal Carolina Mat Club, sponsored by the Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department. Tryouts Set Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department will hold registration and tryouts for two prc major baseball teams. Tryouts for ball players from West and South Brunswick high schools will be held May 18 from 3 p.m. un til 5 p.m. at West and May 20 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at South. Registration for students from North Brunswick High School and Acme Dclco High School is sched uled May 19 from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. and May 20 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at North Brunswick. Shredders finished first in the middle school division of the Nation al Scholastic Surfing Association's Carolina Conference, made up of teams from Long Beach to Folly Beach, S.C. The team is trying to raise money for a trip to Oceanside, Calif., June 24-27 to compete for the national title, said Coach Marty Mentzer. A reggae concert featuring The Amateurs will be held this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the middle school. Tickets are $4 in advance and $5 at the door. Supply-Mount Olive Leads Men's Church Softball League League - leading Supply - Mount Olive Baptist edged Shallotte First Baptist 10-6 last Friday and topped Zion Baptist 7-6 earlier in the week to improve its record to 5-0 in the Brunswick County Men's Church Softball League. Ocean View Baptist (4-1) re mained in second place with an 11 1 ripping of Calvary Baptist, also last Friday as the 10-team league moved into its second week of play. In other church league play Monday, Friendship Baptist routed Longwood Baptist 19-3, New Britian Baptist trounced Letties Grove Pcnecostal 32-13 and Zion Baptist defeated Shallotte First Baptist 21-10. In the only other game played last Friday, Camp Methodist edged Letties Grove 15-10. Results from the week prior (Friday) saw Ocean View edge Shallotte First Baptist 13-10 and Friendship romped over Camp Methodist 22-7. In the Monday games, Calvary rebounded to topple Letties Grove 17-9 and New Britian trounced Friendship 22-3.
