Union Students Design Book Covers
Winners in the "Kids Who Read
Succeed" book covers and book
marks contest at Union Primary
School were recently chosen.
Students from grades one through
three entered the contest, with each
participating earning a certificate
from school media coordinator
Etherine Butler.
The program helps to bring chil
dren and books together. Last
month, students read their favorite
books and illustrated them by mak
ing a book cover or bookmark using
their creativity and imagination.
In the bookmark competition,
seven classes entered.
Winners from Wilhelmenia Bel
lamy's kindergarten class were Bry
ant Price, first; Philip Conner, sec
ond; Chris Phelps, third; and Chan
da Marlowe, fourth.
From Foy Crary's first-grade
class, winners were James Fort, first;
Eric Gibble, second; Joshua Knight,
third; and Lynn Clemmons, fourth.
Karen Wilmoth's sccond-gradc
class listed Lashonda Gray, first;
Christina Cesensas, second; Kellie
N. White, third; and Brandon H.
Hagler, fourth.

Seniors Vie For $2,500
Williamson Scholarships
Two seniors from each of Bruns
wick County's three high schools
compete Sunday, May 19, for
S2.500 one-year scholarships to be
awarded in the annual Odell and
Viriginia Williamson Oratorical
competition.
The speak-off, which is open to
the public, begins at 3:30 p.m. Sun
day in the Student Center at Bruns
wick Community College in Supply.
Competing will be winners of
school competitions at West, South
and North Brunswick high schools.
From West Brunswick, the final
ists ae Chris Byrd, Abortion: Choi
ces for America, and Elisha Smith,
whose speech title was not available.
Representing South Brunswick
will be Ralph Parker Jr., Control
ling Your Destiny, and Amy Thom
as, Never Give Up.
Speaking from North Brunswick
will be James Walker III, Troubled
Times, and Crystal M. Williams, No
Place To Go.
Each of these students has al
ready received a $100 cash prize as
a local school winner.
One senior boy and one senior
girl will each receive a one-time,
non-renewable $2,500 scholarship
to the North Carolina four-year col
lege or university, or two-year trans
fer program of their choice.
Entrants in the competition must
have attended Brunswick County
Schools for at least two years.
Competing in the local school
contests were these additional stu

Michelle Johnson, West Brunswick;
Anthony Justice, Locke Karriker,

ROCAME Teams Win 4 First-Place Awards
Brunswick County teams won
first place in four of 10 events in the
annual Region O Council for 'he
Advancement of Minorities in En
gineering (ROCAME) jamboree
held at UNC-Wilmington April 27.
The local teams also won second
place in two events while compet
ing with ROCAME students from
four area school systems.
Julian Bryant, of North Bruns
wick High, won first place in the
mousetrap car competition. Terri
Smith and Bonnie Lee, of South
Brunswick High, won a first-place
award in the scrapbook competition.
Ms. Smith serves as its editor while
Ms. Lee is an artist.
Tamara Johnson, of South Bruns
wick High, won first place in the
process paper competition.
All-county quiz bowl teams won
both the middle school and high
school events. Members of the mid
dle school team were Ali Knox,
captain, and Dcon Bowman, both of
Leland Middle; Jayda Grant, of
South Brunswick Middle; and Tif
faney Marlow, of Waccamaw Ele
mentary.
Members of the high school quiz
bowl team were Timmy Myles, cap
tain, of South Brunswick; Julian
Bryant and Rona Martin, of North
Brunswick; and Tikila Morgan, of
West Brunswick.
All-county teams won second
place in industrial engineering com
petitions at both the middle and
high school levels.
Students on the middle school
team, called The Untouchables,

Shalane King, of Waccamaw Ele
mentary; Jayda Grant and Amie
Sidberry of South Brunswick; Deon
