SPORTING SCENE Everyone Remembered ' Good Old George ' BY JOHNNY CRAIG Well over a thousand family-members and friends turned out at the West Brunswick gym Saturday afternoon for memorial services for Trojan athlete George Daniels who died in an auto accident last Tuesday morning enroute to school. Daniels, who lived in the Longwood community, was the epitome of the zillions of small-town high school athletes that can be found across ru ral America. High school athletes and the games they play are the rallying points for so many of these rural communities. And on Saturday they came to rally around Daniels and his family once more, only this time it was of much greater significance than a game saving tackle, a quarterback sack or a brilliant pitching performance. The Saturday services in a sweltering Trojan gym brought to an end a stunning, grieving and bewildering week for the Daniels family and the West Brunswick community. It was only fitting to gather in the West Brunswick gym where only a hundred yards away were the Trojan baseball and football fields on which Daniels had starred. The adolescent high school days and the amateur-side of athletics played at the prep level arc supposed to be fun. It is such sudden events as this that bring up the question of our own mortality and the fact that life is so uncertain. West Brunswick baseball coach Mike Alderson, football coach Marshall Scay and basketball coach Billy Mims all remarked on their closeness and association with Daniels on Saturday. Each coach echoed the other talking of "good old George" the way a father would speak of his own son. Daniels, at 6-foot-2 and 238 pounds, had the perfect blend of confi dence, a team-before-self attitude and the size that are all instrumental in the success of a high school athlete. Shortly after winning his fifth game of the season in an 14-3 romp over South Robeson earlier this month, Daniels gathered his baseball teammates in the dugout and asked each to sign the game ball. It didn't matter who played or who didn't, George wanted every Trojan to have a part in the moment. Rather than give it a "Ricky Henderson ? I'm The Greatest" speech, Daniels sought a better way to remember the special win by instead sharing it with the teammates who made it possible. Daniels, a junior, compiled a 6-2 pitching record this spring having won his last contest on the mound for the Trojans in a 6-3, six-inning deci sion at West Columbus two weeks ago. Daniels was buried Saturday in his Trojan baseball uniform along with the same bat he held at the time of his death. His baseball jersey (no. 19) and football jersey (no. 74) will both be retired at tonight's (Thursday) West Brunswick sports awards ceremony. No other Trojan athlete has ever had dual numbers retired in school history. Whiteville Nips Lady Cougars 7-6 Whiteville edged visiting South Brunswick 7-6 last Tuesday in Waccamaw 2-A Conference softball play. Andrea Sibbett hurled the win for the Lady Wolfpack while Tonya Jones, LaShanta Godfrey and Angela Slater all had two hits for Whiteville (7-6 in the WC). South Brunswick led 3-0 in the top of the third inning but Whiteville scored four times in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-3 advantage. The Lady Cougars knotted the score at 4-4 with a single run in the sixth but Whiteville answered against with a pair of runs for a 6-4 lead. South Brunswick added two final runs in the top of the seventh but Whiteville scored the winning run on Godfrey's RBI-single. In other Waccamaw Conference play involving county teams last week. North Brunswick took a 19-5, six-inning win over South Robeson. S. Hunters who have never owned a license must complete a certified hunter's education course before buying a license. Licenses will go on sale June 20, said N.C. Wildlife Officer Fred Taylor. Persons must show proof of having had a previous license or else complete one of eight courses offered in Biunswick Cuuniy ai iiic Co operative Extension Building at the government complex in Bolivia. Courses will also be taught in some schools, mostly in seventh grade classes, said Taylor. Officers and volunteers certified by the N.C. Wildlife Commission will serve as instructors. There is no charge for the 10-hour course. Each participant will receive a workbook that covers state laws and regulations, wildlife conservation, identification and management of game, gun handling, care and storage of firearms, game handling, first aid and other information. Forty states now require certification before a hunting license is is sued, Taylor said. People who complete the course will receive a certifi cate, identification card and patch. The hunter education course is a new requirement designed to pro mote hunter safety statewide, said M.S. McLean, N.C. Wildlife officer. "This year will be our first initial enforcement of the new laws," McLean said. Following are the hunter education courses offered in Brunswick County.
