Hewett Honored Amy Michelle Hcwett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mack L. Hewett of Shallotte, was awarded the June Louise Samson Award for music during the Salem College Honors Convocation May 14. Miss Hewett is a junior majoring in music and arts management. Salem College is a private, liberal arts college located in Winston Salem. Douglas Wilder were just a few of the famous persons who turned out for a social studies fair held by Julia Morrison and Sheila Gore's combination fourth-fifth grade and Linda Alexander's fifth grade class last week at Shallotte Middle School The program featured students' research of political, cultural, historical and geo graphic information about the 50 states, with fourth-graders focusing on North Carolina. Students Hear About Careers Students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade at Waccamaw School obtained first-hand information about jobs in the community at a Career Day sponsored May 10 by the school's Career Exploration Club. Presenters from about 20 career areas shared information about their work and interesting experiences on the job. They discussed the link be tween good work habits such as punctuality, cooperation, reliability and honesty and the job they do each day, as well as the importance of education to their careers. Presenters shared information with at least three groups of stu dents for 20 minuts each. Formal talks were followed by question and answer sessions. Careers represented included en gineering, funeral directing, bank ing, marketing, insurance, law en forcement, education, child care, nursing, various types of industry, auto services, fast food restaurants, farming, graphic and written arts and science. Participants included Dean Corn stubble and Andrew Seed, Scott Evans, Donncll Marlowe, George Stanley, Ralph King, Bonita Sloan, Sally McMillan, Michael Stanley, Polly Russ, William Flythe, Kate Williamson, Cary Godwin, Moe Stanley, Phil Burton, Judy King and Arthalia Bennett.
