Lincoln Primary Claims j Cafeteria Of Year Honors ; Lincoln Primary School at Le land won Cafeteria of the Year hon ors at the Brunswick County School Food Sen-ice Association awards banquet May 17 at Leland Middle School. Achievement and participation awards were presented by Paula Tillman, merchandising and facili ties coordinator with the N.C. Dept. of Public Instruction, and Shcrryl Johnson, county child nutrition di rector. Leland Middle School finished second in the Caftcria of the Year competition, followed by Bolivia Elementary in third. Ms. Johason said selection for cafeteria of the year is based on overall performance in a number of areas, including financial operations, employee attendance, nutrition edu cation and student participation. Lincoln's operation was financial ly sound, employees had a good at > tcndance record and had no acci j dents in the kitchen, and had "some going all year long" in nutri t uui i education, she said. The staff also listened to stu ? dents' suggestions, installing a salad bar at their request. "If you make the students happy, participation should go up," said ? Ms. Johnson. * At Lincoln, it did this from ? from about 78 percent overall to : around 87 percent overall. While Waccamaw Elementary 1 was recognized as the cafeteria with highest overall work attendance, [five individuals from across the county were honored for perfect work attendance. They are Mary Alice Hankins, manager, Bolivia ? Elementary; Marzella McKoy, man ager, North Brunswick High; Mag HEWETT COLEMAN Primary; Lois St. George, assistant manager. South port Primary; and Icelean Bellamy, Waccamaw. Waccamaw, which also had the highest overall participation, was recognized for having both the highest breakfast and lunch partici pation of any elementary school. Lcland was cited as having the best percent breakfast and lunch partici pation of any middle school. North Brunswick had the highest percent breakfast participation and tied with West Brunswick for highest percent lunch participation. Bolivia Elementary School had the highest adult participation and was also recognized as having the most breakfast and lunch improve ment Waccamaw was recognized for receiving the highest sanitation grade of any cafeteria, while Lin coln Primary was cited for having the best nutrition education and training program. Lincoln Primary and Lcland Middle received blue ribbon awards of excellence from the State Depart ment of Public Instruction and South Brunswick Middle received a red ribbon. Thirty-six county school cafeteria employees received certificates and pins for participating in the associa tion's Walking Club. Florence Hewett of Union Pri mary School, who walked 266 miles, won the trophy for the most miles walked. Marsha Coleman, Waccamaw Elementary School, lost 26 pounds to receive the trophy for most pounds lost. West Brunswick High School re ceived a certificate for the school with the most miles walked, 325, and most pounds lost, 67. Schools Superintendent Honors Academic Efforts Thirty-six student scholars from the county's elementary, middle and high schools received awards of ex cellence from Brunswick County Superintendent of Schools P.R. Hankins last Tuesday at a banquet honoring them and their parents. Guest speaker for the event was Robert Tyndall, dean of the School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He commended Hankins and the coun ty school board for their celebration of students' academic achieve ments. Receiving awards of excellence, by school, were these students: West Brunswick High: Chris Byrd, Perty Grissett, Allan Hewett, Terrancc Nawara and Jennifer Russ; Shallotle Middle: Amanda Bul trey, Elizabeth Dctrie, Aaron Hawk ins, S henna Lancaster, Angela Long, Rachel Swain, ieremie Vamam and Lucas Wagenseil; Waccamaw: Rebecca Rae Hughes and Sidney Long; North Brunswick High: Tracy Haddock, Kyung Lee and Christine Lloyd: Leland Middle: Kristen Hewett, Ginger Pope, Shauna Turner and Shadcrika Willis; Bolivia Elementary: Christopher Gore and Denise Dawson; South Brunswick Middle: Jeremy Coston, Charles Gilbert, Todd Mid gett and Jim Shew; South Brunswick High: Amelia Hawes, Lock Karriker, Cheryl Shat terly and Ernest Wearren; and Southport Elementary: Courtney Aderhold, Joshua Cumbee, Megan Jeans and Bobby McBride.
