Brunswick County Post 68 Opens On Winning Note Brunswick County Post 68 open ed its American Legion baseball season successfully last Tuesday with a 6-4 win over visiting Warsaw Post 127. Post 68 swept a pair of Area II Eastern Division games from Bladenboro Post 268 and Jackson ville Post 265 over the weekend. Brunswick County ripped Blad enboro 21-9 on Friday and nipped Jacksonville 12-11 on Saturday. Jimmy Sandee's two-run double in the seventh inning helped spark the Lcland team in their win over Warsaw. Sandee finished the game with two doubles and four runs bat ted in while Chris McBridc and Ed Lewis had two hits each. Chris Walker was the winning pitcher giving up six hits and strik ing out seven. Chuck Sutton took the loss for Warsaw going 2.2 innings and al lowing three runs on three hits. Sutton also had a two-run homer to lead Post 127 at the plate. In other Eastern Division play last week, Wilmington Post 10 won its first four games of the season with a 12-4 decision over Jackson ville, a 6-0 shutout of Warsaw, an 18-3 rout of Bladenboro and an 8-5 nipping of Burgaw. Winter Park split a pair of games with a 12-7 romp over Burgaw Post 165 after dropping a 6-5, 14-inning decision to Jacksonville. Burgaw got its first win of the season with a 5-0 blanking of Jack sonville. Whitevillc Post 137 divided its first two games of the campaign with Scotland County Post 50. Scotland won the first game 10-8 before Whiteville rallied to take the second, 4-3. Bladenboro Post 268 Spoils Brunswick Shores Opener Bladenboro Post 268 edged visit ing Brunswick Shores Post 445, 8-4 on Monday in the local American Legion baseball team's season opener. Winning pitcher Gary Rhoda struck out 16 and limited Brunswick Shores to just six hits. Shawn Swain took the loss for Brunswick. Aldwin Lance had a double and Corey Brown added an RBI squeeze bunt to lead the local team. Bryan Fleming and Mike Sellers al so had hits for Brunswick Shores. "For a lot of the players, this was their first game in several weeks," said Shores manager Mike Al derson. "We've had only one prac tice since the high school state play offs ended but 1 believe we will be okay. We made a lot of mental mis takes tonight but I expect us to ma ture and begin to jell together soon." Brunswick Shores (0-1) led 2-0 until Bladenboro scored three runs in the fifth inning to take the lead for good. Post 445 continues Area II Eastern Division play with two home games scheduled for this weekend. Brunswick Shores hosts Wil mington Post 10 at Shallolte on Friday and Jacksonville Post 265 at Boiling Spring Lakes on Saturday. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m. Post 445 visits Burgaw Post 165 on Monday and then returns home to entertain Winter Park on Wednesday at Boiling Spring Lakes at 7:30 p.m. Winfree Wins Javelin In Jr. Olympic Qualifying Meet Jessi Winfrce, a rising eighth grader fit Shallotte Middle School, captured first place in the javelin last Saturday at a Junior Olympic qualifying track and field meet at UNC-Wilmington. Winfree, competing in the 13-14 year-old division, won the event with a throw of 58 feel, one inch. Winfree, along with the top five finishers in the qualifying meet, which featured some 12 different events, will advance to the Regional Junior Olympic meet to be held June 29-30 at Chapel Hill. "I expect Jessi to do well in the re gional meet since she has thrown West Athletes Must Students who will be attending West Brunswick High School next year and plan to participate in school athletics must get a physical examination next Tuesday. Jennies Branch Church Loses First Game In Baptist League Jennies Branch losi its first game of the Brunswick Baptist Associa tion Coed Softball League season Saturday, forfeiting to Antioch II. The forfeit narrowed the gap to one game between Jennies Branch and Antioch II, which arc the top two teams in the league standings. In other action Saturday, Soldier Bay blasted Sunset Harbor 15-2, and Antioch I upset Faith by a score of 10-9. The loss dropped league-leading Supply/Mount Olive to 9-1 while Ocean View tightened its grip on second place while improving to 8 2. Brunswick To Host 'Bigger, Faster and Stronger' Clinic North Brunswick High School will host an athlctic clinic organized by the strength coaches of the National Basketball Association's Utah Jazz on Saturday, June 15. This will be the first "Bigger, Faster and Stronger" clinic to be held in the area and will involve all athletes at North Brunswick and Wilmington Hoggard. "This is a once in a lifetime op portunity and something we're real ly looking forward to," said North Brunswick athlctic director and head football coach Gary Baldwin earlier this week. "It's certainly a first for this area." The clinic will tcach the latest techniques in weight lifting as well as athletic training along with up-to date nutrition information for athletes. The goal of the event, according to Baldwin, will be to leave each athlete busting with an intense de sire to succeed on his or her own. 'The clinic will also motivate the athletes and point out the things that are needed for success," added Baldwin.
