Ocean Isle Crew Lands White Marlin BY JAMIE MILLIKEN Dr. Kendal Suh of Occan Isle Beach, on his boat, the Mackerel Missile, had an unforgettable Sunday of fishing. CAPTAIN Larry Dudley, Reagan Dudley and John Schwab ? were the crew. JAMIE'S Kendal was working an area 60 miles off OFFSHORE Ocean Isle and had picked up several nice dol- rieuikir? phin. They were fast trolling skirted ballyhoo FISHING when the white marlin struck. Larry Dudley was REPORT the angler. The marlin made an estimated 10-12 grayhounding leaps during the battle. As the crew cleared all the other lines, someone did remember that there was a video camcra aboard and had presence of mind to start filming. I tell you, it is not easy to think of small thing like that when you're hooked up with a marlin. You usually think of all the things that you could have done-after the fight When they brought the fish alongside, they made the decision to re lease him. On the ride back in, Larry told Kendal that he should consid er changing the name of the Mackerel Missile to the Marlin Missile. Great job, Kendal and crew! Another step toward the South Brunswick Island becoming the marlin capital of the state. Harbourgate Marina in North Myrtle Beach, S. C., will host this year's Captain Poo's King Mack-Attack Tournament. Four classes of fish will go toward determining an overall winner. King mackerel, wa hoo, dolphin and cobia are the eligible species. The captain's meeting and registration will be held Friday, June 14 at 7:30 p.m., with lines in the water a 7 a.m. Saturday and the scales closing at 7 p.m. The awards ceremony and a cookout will follow. Entry fee is ?200 per boat and it is an all cash payout tournament. Last week while covering the Sun-Fun King Tournament, I made a mental error in not recognizing six-year-old Mark Cain of Calabash as the winner of the Junior Angler Award. Mark won the $1,000 prize while fishing with his father Mike aboard the Ram-Rod. That's it for now. Until then, tight lines, bent rods and good fishin'. Mary Roscoe of Sea Mist Camp ing Resort at Brick Landing said fishermen had "an excellent week end" catching spots and flounder. But the fishing wasn't so great everywhere else. Sue Fury of Inde pendent Seafood at Holdcn Beach said offshore fishing was very slow over the weekend. Most anglers blamed it on the wind shift following last week's cool snap. "It was a quiet weekend on the old, big pond," Ms. Fury said Monday. Early last week, she said fisher men caught king and Spanish mack erel and ambcrjack in the ocean and spots, croaker and flounder in the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Recent catches out of Sea Mist include a 26-pound cobia landed by Jason Everhart of Welcome. Mrs. Roscoe said Jim Norville of Rocky Mount and Ken Krimm of Raleigh recently hooked four kings and four dolphin at the 18-mile reef off Shal lotlc Inlet John Sheffield of Sheffield's at Ocean Isle Beach said Monday that the fishing seemed to improve when the weather warmed up late last week. Ocean fishermen caught a lot of kings and Spanish over the weekend and anglers pulled flounder from the waterway. Sheffield said the fishing should be good this week if the wind con tinues to blow out of the south and southwest. Pier Fishing Pier fishermen also enjoyed vari ous levels of success last week de pending on where they wet their lines. The fishing was hot at Ocean Isle Bcach and Sunset Beach last week, but somewhat slow at Holdcn Bcach. Anglers pulled in two kings Sat urday at Sunset Bcach Fishing Pier, said manager Ed Kaylcr. Mike Tucker Jr. of Hickory caught a 38 pounder, and the other king weigh ed 12 pounds. Fishermen also caught spots, trout, whiting, blues and flounder last week. "It's been real good." said Kayler. Ocean Isle Beach Fishing Pier Manager Curtis Williamson said an glers caught spots, blues and floun der. "They're tearing it up out there now," Williamson said Monday morning. "Our pier's filling up. It looks like we're going to have a good day." Williamson said fishermen had a "right good week" and he expects the month of June to be a good one for fishing. Gil Bass of Holdcn Beach Fish ing Pier said anglers caught a few spots, croaker, whiting and Spanish last week. "It has slowed down to the regu lar summer fishing," Bass said. "Not a great report, but not a total loss." FISHING REPORT PHOTO COHT RIBU T ? O HAL NICHOLAS of Hunt ington, VV. Va., caught this 12 pound hog snapper last week aboard the Super Salty I out of Holden Beach. Nicholas was a passenger on the Salty I when it caught Tire and sank June 25, 1987.
