You Should Have Seen
The One That Got Away
BY JAMIE M1LLIKEN
What a weekend of fishing! A light southwest wind, combined with a
high pressure system, made conditions absolutely beautiful. The Gulf
stream had moved to within 45 miles off our
coast The fishing was hot! GAPTAI N
My ole fishing buddy, Rube McMullan, came JAMIE S
up from Georgia and he and his two sons. Brant OFFSHORE
and Barrett, caught what I call a King Neptune FISHING
Platter. They had wahoo, tuna, king mackerel, ncn/\nT
grouper and dolphin. All caught in one trip. REPORT
Sammy Sessions of Ocean Isle had a great trip on Tuesday. The
highlight was a 46-pound snowy grouper. Monte Bentley was the an
gler. Rumor has it that Monte will never be the same.
Adam Sanders of Ocean Isle developed a new technique on barracu
da fishing. It seems that one guy on the boat had never caught a 'cuda
and wanted one for a mount Adam used a live pogy to catch a six
pound king, then rigged the king and put him back out. I guess that king
was too great a temptation for that eating machine of a fish. Results-in
stant barracuda.
?????
The Caribbean Soul saw lots of action Saturday. My son Justin,
David Hooks and I fished the Captain Poo's King Mack- Attack Tourna
ment. We had planned to fish an area 52 miles out so at 4:30 a.m.
Saturday we were feeling our way through Little River InleL Let me tell
you friends, it was dark. At 5 a.m. we had cleared the sea buoy and I
pushed her up to 4200 RPM and in the calm sea we were out of here.
Things were going great until we were 35 miles out and hit a line of
thunderstorms. It was decision time and I made it We were not going
on to the 52, we were moving back to the 32-mile hole.
As we set our lines a small king hit on a skirted ballyhoo. First fish
in the boat. We continued to pick up a few small ones as the morning
progressed. It was around 10 a.m. when the reel sang. And it sang, and
sang and sang. We knew we had us a fish. Justin and I reeled in the oth
er lines as David watched the line peel off. I moved the boat so that we
were able to gain some of the line that we had losL At 20 minutes into
the fight, we saw the king. It had to have been 40 to 50 pounds. At the
30-minute mark he was directly below the boat and probably 30 feet
down. At the 35-minute mark David made the comment, "I think he is
starting to give up." That's when disaster struck. The king made one last
run straight down tail-cut the line. Friends and neighbors, I cannot tell
you how far my heart sank when I saw that line go slack. Gone was the
sure winner of the tournament
We caught our limit and headed back in to see Captain Wyndell
Vereen of North Myrtle Beach win the money for the largest king mack
erel with a 23-pound king. Congratulations to all the winners.
What a day.
That's it for now-light lines, bent rods and good fishin'.

Answers to your
V^/uestions about
Conjunctivitis^
Q. What Is conjunctivitis?
A. Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, a thin,
transparent layer covering the surface of the inner eyelid and a
portion of the front of the eye. This condition appears in many
forms and affects people of all ages.
Q. What causes conjunctivitis?
A. The three main types of conjunctivitis are infectious, allergic and
chemical. The infectious, allergic and chemical. The infectious
form, commonly known as "pink eye" is caused by a contagious
virus or bacteria. Your body's allergies to pollen, cosmetics, ani
mals or fabrics often bring on allergic conjunctivitis. And, irritants
like pollution, noxious fumes and chlorine in swimming pools may
produce the chemical form.
Q. What are the signs/symptoms of conjunctivitis?
A. Commons signs/symptoms of conjunctivitis are red eyes, in
flamed inner lids, watery eyes, blurred vision and a sandy or
scratchy feeling in the eyes. With the infectious form, there may
be a pus-like or watery discharge around the eyelids.
Q. Since infectious conjunctivitis is contagious, what mea
sures can be taken to prevent spreading this condition?
A. To avoid giving infectious conjunctivitis to others, keep your
hands away from your eyes; thoroughly wash your hands be
fore and after applying eye medication; do not share towels,
washcloths, cosmetics or eyedrops with others and seek treat
ment promptly. Small children, who may forget these precau
tions, should be kept away from school, camp and the swim
ming pool until the condition is cured.
Q. Will conjunctivitis harm my eyes?
A. Certain forms of conjunctivitis can develop into a serious condi
tion that may harm your vision. Therefore, it's important to have
your condition diagnosed and properly treated quickly.
Q. How is infectious conjunctivitis treated?
A. Infectious conjunctivitis, caused by bacteria, is usually treated
with antibiotic eye drops and/or ointment. Other infectious
forms, caused by viruses, can't be treated with antibiotics. They
are fought off by your body's immune system. But, some antibi
otics may be prescribed to prevent secondary bacterial infec
tions from developing.
Q.How are the allergic and chemical forms of conjunctivitis
treated?
A. The ideal treatment for both forms is to remove the cause of the
allergy or irritation. For instance, avoid contact with any animal if
it causes an allergic reaction. Wear swimming goggles if chlori
nated water irritates your eyes. In cases where these measures
won't work, other types of prescription and over-the-counter eye
drops are available to help relieve the discomfort.
